On the Scene: 'America's Got Talent' Names First Four Semi-Finalists
The first four acts that made it to the semi-finals on 'America's Got Talent' were mostly all predictable. Audience members screamed out the names Nathaniel Kenyon, Fighting Gravity and Future Funk when the respective performers took their place alongside the groups that didn't make it through. Singing sisters and Christina and Ali were really the only surprise of the night.Skip to the next paragraph if you have thought fans in the audience actually create those homemade signs that are held up during the show. They don't. At least not always. A production associate from the show handed several out to audience members shortly before the live program began. One lady got a poster rooting for Nick Pike. "Who's this?" she said. When told it was the fire juggler she said, "Oh" and offered the decorated banner to people in the row behind her. (That's gotta burn, Nick, but you went out with a heartfelt and classy apology to the judges not to mention an impressive back-flip.)
The ear-piercing squeals for Kenyon indicated he could be sick for another week and still be voted through to the finals. Many of the young women in the audience had clearly voted for him as often as possible. But Airpocalypse, who lost to Kenyon, had plenty of fans in the 'family and friends' section. "I can't believe that kid [got through]," a voice from the fan/friend rows called out after Airpocalypse lost.
The audience warm-up guy is not only energetic, funny and very good at his job, but he's also going right to heaven when he dies. He let a kid in the stands named Robbie leave his seat in order to get a hug from guest singer Selena Gomez after she performed.
Paul Safey Jr., who failed to make it through to the next round, has his share of fans, too. "We love you Paul!" screamed a supporter after he lost to two acts comprised of children.
Constantine Maroulis blessed himself (twice, I believe) before performing a routine from 'Rock of Ages' with Dee Snider.
After the show, TV Squad talked to the judges and some of the losers who were keeping a stiff upper lip. One of the Kung Fu Heroes is hoping to hear on an audition he had for a New Zealand version of 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.'"It's live TV, anything can happen," host Nick Cannon said about the show almost going over. "But we made it!"
Was Cannon surprised by any of the acts that made it through? "I think it was pretty clear," he said. "We saw the great performances and we saw the ones who didn't do their best. America made the wise choices."
"I think I can speak honestly here," said Airpocalypse's Air Guitar X. "As soon as we heard Nathaniel Kenyon's name we knew what was up."
Howie Mandel had the deciding vote for the final act once fellow judges Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne threw their respective support for Future Funk and RNG (Rated Next Generation.) Mandel would have been fine if he hadn't been the tiebreaker. "I would have love to have not cared what I think," he said. "It wasn't fun. Maybe the decision was easier to make than to implement. It was the only time this season that I'd wished I was at home yelling at the TV not saying it here to a child's face. Call me Sophie. That was 'Sophie's Choice.'"
The biggest shock of the night was hand-whistler Sally Cohn not making the semi-final cut. "I thought I was [going through], too," Cohn said. "But I was also prepared for this eventuality. In some ways, I'm relived. I'm not sure what I'd do with a headliner show in Las Vegas. But there are other opportunities that have opened up. My e-mail and Facebook [accounts] are full. I have over 2700 messages in my email."
Maybe she'll return for a wild card slot? "If it doesn't happen, I'm prepared," Cohn said. "I've been prepared all along either way. I didn't apply for this show. They sought me out after seeing my video on Youtube.com."
Osbourne maintained she wasn't influenced to vote for RNG after Piers voted for Future Funk. Her support of the all-girl group means, however, that a handful of little girls get to go home knowing they didn't lose unanimously to Future Funk. "I think that yesterday I was really into the girls anyway," she said. "The boys weren't as much into them as I was. [The girls of RNG] are going to be phenomenal dancers."
Morgan thought that singer Paul Safey Jr. fell victim to the show having too many good crooners this season. "We've got an amazing number of singers. Paul would have, in other years, had a good chance in going to the semi-finals, maybe even the finals [but] this year, it's really tough for the singers."
