Ratings Race: 'Big Brother' Is Strong, But 'Talent' Rules the Night

NBC (2.2/7, 7.92 million) and FOX (2.2/7, 6 million) continue to battle it out with their summer reality hits, drawing a tie in the demo for Wednesday night. NBC easily took the night in total viewers, however, thanks to a strong showing from 'Minute to Win It' and a 'Law & Order: SVU' repeat.CBS (1.6/5, 6.08 million) is steady as she goes with their lineup of repeat procedurals, while 'Big Brother' continued its strong opening, improving on last season with each installment. ABC remained in an even fourth place with their comedy lineup getting no help from a baseball-themed 'Charlie Brown' special at the top of the night, while The CW treads water with repeats of 'America's Next Top Model' back-to-back through the summer.
Next season should be interesting as 'Survivor' moves to CBS Wednesdays, while NBC establishes a procedural night of their own with back-to-back 'Law & Order' series: 'SVU' leading into the new 'Los Angeles.' FOX tries to build a new night with transplants 'Lie to Me' and 'Hell's Kitchen,' while ABC tries to find that elusive fourth comedy for their block with 'Better Together.

'Big Brother' (2.3/8, 6.308 million) continued a successful premiere week for CBS, up 10 percent in the 18-49 demo from last year's Wednesday premiere. It was enough to take the demo title for the hour, though the eye had to settle for a split, giving the viewer crown to NBC's 'Minute to Win It' (2.0/8, 6.596 million).
FOX had to settle for a disappointing third with the first half of a new 'So You Think You Can Dance' (2.2/8, 5.925 million). With injuries impacting the performances and results the past few weeks, fans may be getting frustrated.
ABC tried to attract some of that 'All-Star Game' love with a re-airing of the special 'Lucy Must Be Traded, Charlie Brown' (0.9/3, 3.928 million) before a single 'The Middle' (3.39 million) rerun, but it didn't improve the hour at all. The CW was steady as well with the first of two repeats of 'America's Next Top Model' (0.4/2, 1.147 million).

There was no rest for FOX, as NBC dominated the night with 'America's Got Talent' (3.0/10, 11.174 million) towering over everything else. 'So You Think You Can Dance' (2.3/7, 6.076 million) had to settle for a split of second place, taking the demo title. CBS claimed second in viewers with a repeat of 'Criminal Minds' (1.4/4, 6.328 million).
ABC was even with a repeat of 'Modern Family' (1.3/4, 4.025 million), while 'Cougar Town' (1.0/3, 2.827 million) slipped to a new summer low. The show needs a serious image overhaul along with a new title and ABC really should start the marketing machine on that now before it fades away completely.
The CW kept it above a million viewers, barely, with their second 'America's Next Top Model' (0.4/1, 1.007 million).
10:00
It was all repeats at 10 o'clock with no real surprises. NBC took the hour with 'Law & Order: SVU' (1.6/5, 5.986 million), while CBS came in a close second in total viewers, if not in the demo, with 'CSI: NY' (1.2/4, 5.616 million). 'Castle' (0.9/3, 3.988 million) recovered nicely from 'Cougar Town's' low in total viewers, improving 29 percent, while losing a tenth in the demo. It's on par with ABC's comedy lineup as a placeholder until new series 'The Whole Truth' takes over in the fall.

A BIT ABOUT THE NUMBERS
Below is the format we use for showing the ratings data with a quick explanation of each part
Example: 'Show' (Demo/Share, Viewers+SD) [Network-Time]
Show - The name of the show. (R) indicates a repeat. (S) indicates a special presentation. (M) indicates a movie.
Demo - The percentage of adults aged 18-49 tuned to this show. This is the demographic advertisers desire.
Share - The percentage of adults 18-49 households with their televisions on who are turned to this show.
Viewers+SD - The total viewers including both live viewers and DVR viewers who watched the program the same day (generally by 3AM). DVR penetration has reached about 24 percent of American households
Network - The network the show aired on.
Time - The show's scheduled start time (this can get skewed for sporting events or other live programming).
Nielsen compiles their ratings from randomly selected representative groups of households. Overnight ratings are tabulated by tracking the channels that are on during each time period in those houses. As such, if a live event interrupts or delays the start of a program in certain areas, this data will not reflect those changes. Also, if a local affiliate chooses not to run a network's program at the scheduled time for some reason, this change will also not be represented. Thus, these figures can be skewed and should only be used as a general guideline. We will do our best to alert you when situations that could affect the accuracy of these figures occurs.
Our thanks to TV by the Numbers for their figures and estimates. If you have any questions about the ratings or what it all means, feel free to hit us up in the comments. We'll be here every day for you.
