Happy Birthday, Kristen Bell! 30 Reasons Why We Love Her

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 18th 2010 10:00AM
Kristen BellToday is Kristen Bell's 30th birthday!

Yes, the pint-sized 'Veronica Mars' and 'Heroes' star is the big 3-0, despite often getting mistaken for a teenager.

To celebrate the actress who gave us the wonderfully sassy VMars, here are 30 reasons why Ms. Bell has cemented herself in pop culture and our hearts. From projects to quotes, it's all here.

What are you waiting for? Get charmed and wish her a happy birthday!

1. She loves to eat at Big Boy. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Bell made her love of the restaurant chain known. "I go there a lot," Bell said. "I crave Midwestern food and atmosphere - there's no bulls--t. Sometimes when I know I'm being watched or judged, it creates a scary sense of insecurity that I didn't used to have [before becoming famous]. But none of that exists at Big Boy."

2. Bell is using her birthday for good. For her birthday, she's asking fans to donate to one of the many charities she supports. This year, she set a goal of $100,000 for Charity:Water, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing clean drinking water to people in developing nations. Check out her page here.

3. She gave up eating meat at the age of 11. Bell has been named one of the world's sexiest vegetarians by animal rights organization PETA, but she's also smart about her vegetarianism. "My mom was a nurse, and when I stopped eating meat she made me learn how to do it in a healthy way," Bell told Women's Health. "It's not just protein you might lose out on; it's magnesium and zinc and other things animals provide. I try to eat more fresh foods than processed ones, and the grainiest bread possible."

4. 'Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical.' Bell starred in the Off-Broadway production of 'Reefer Madness' and reprised the role for the movie. She's got musical chops, see below.

5. Her five favorite comedy flicks are: 'Waiting for Guffman,' 'The Jerk,' 'Strangers with Candy,' 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation' and 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.' [Women's Health]

6. She's not ashamed of her lazy eye. Bell is a regular guest on 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson' and on more than one occasion she's shown off Wonky, her lazy eye.

7. She loves the classics -- cartoons that is. At a tender age, around 3 or 4 years old, Bell said she tried to change her name to Smurfette. "I was a big fan of 'The Snorks.' I did really like 'The Smurfs' as well and at a point ... I tried to change my name to Smurfette. I really did," Bell told Comcast.net. How she didn't make her way into the upcoming 'Smurfs' film is a mystery.

8. She wants to be Harley Quinn. It's a little stretch without Heath Ledger as the Joker in the 'Batman' films, but Bell would be AWESOME as the lunatic lover of the crazed clown. "I would kill to play Harley Quinn," she told Geek Monthly. "Like I would literally kill. If you were to be like, 'Kill this person,' I would be like, 'Who? Where do they live?' I am serious." Look at this fan art over at Cinematical. Perfection.

9. She has her swan song planned.
As her last acting gig, Bell told Diablo Cody in an interview for Interview Magazine that she wants to make 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' into a full-blown musical. "In about 50 years, I really want to make 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?' into a musical, and have it be my last hurrah as a performer," she said . "I want that to be a straight-up musical-maybe even an ironic musical comedy in the vein of 'Reefer Madness.'"

10. This interview.

11. She respects her elders. Bell has a movie coming out in September that stars not only the awesome Sigourney Weaver, but Betty White is also part of the ensemble. Movieline asked her about working with White, and Bell had some choice words: "She -- I mean -- she has me by the balls, I'm going to be honest. She outdoes anyone in the room, she really does. She's by far the funniest in the room and usually the raunchiest."

12. She's level-headed. Bell's first film work was in 'Pootie Tang.' She told Saturday Night Magazine that "'Pooite Tang' is, and always will be, the height of my work," and that she's grateful for ever job she gets. " ... I try to do good things with my time and give help to people and organizations. Celebrities are in a very interesting situation because they're given a voice that people listen to, and I don't take that for granted."

13. She's a fan of 'Jeopardy!'
Honestly, who isn't a fan of 'Jeopardy!'? It's always fun to sweep a category (A confession: I can almost always sweep any TV related category) and Bell's even been an answer on the show more than once. But, she told Health Magazine that she was too nervous to do a celebrity edition of the show. "There are two ways that could go: I could either look like an idiot, or the questions could be so easy, I look like an idiot," Bell said. "Because the questions they ask the celebrities are like, 'Is this cat a cat or a dog?' And you're like, 'What is a cat!' I just think, 'Wait a minute, guys, do we really have to dumb it down that much for the celebs?'"

14. She made 'Heroes' entertaining. 'Heroes' had some really good highs and some really awful lows. A high point was Bell's criminally underused Elle Bishop. She was psychotic and fun, only to meet her end on a beach with Sylar. Lame.

15. She's Queen of the Geeks.
Thanks to 'Veronica Mars,' 'Heroes,' 'Fanboys' and 'Astro Boy,' Bell is no stranger to the geek crowd. "Actresses who shy away from roles [in geek-targeted movies] are idiots, because the geeks are the best fans in the world," Bell told the New York Daily News. "I didn't set out to be this geek chic or whatever it's been dubbed. I look for good projects with good writing and intelligent plot lines, and those happen to be a lot of fanboy projects."

16. She tweets weird, funny things. On Jan. 2, Bell tweeted this image with the caption: "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!"

17. She's an activist. Besides being a huge animal rights activist, Bell hit the road with Rashida Jones to campaign for President Barack Obama. The two stopped by some colleges and Bell also made this video. Go on and watch, even if you don't support Obama she's just encouraging Americans to vote.

18. She loves hockey.
You probably wouldn't expect this tiny blonde actress to love hockey, but Bell is a passionate fan of the Detroit Red Wings. What if she got to be with the Stanley Cup for a day? "I would start by eating an entire box of Fruity Pebbles out of it," she told NHL.com. "Then I'd take an afternoon sponge bath in it. Then I'd retro fit it with handles and make it into a Stanley Cup handbag."

19. Uda Bengt on 'Party Down.' How fun was it to see Bell hurl curse words and insults as the emotionally cold Uda on 'Party Down'? How fun was 'Party Down' in general. *Sigh*

20. She's sassy.
We know the character Veronica Mars was incredibly snarky, but who knew that's how Bell landed the gig. Bell was one of more than 500 women to audition for the title role and it was her sass that caught series creator Rob Thomas' eye. "[Thomas] saw that I have some sass to me, and that's exactly what he wanted," Bell told the Washington Post. "Someone that your first impression of wasn't going to be exactly what she brought to the table. She may have looked a little softer or sweeter, and when she opened her mouth, she was just full of spitfire,"

21.. 'You Again.'
Yes, the movie hasn't even hit theaters yet, but look at this trailer. Not only is it Bell with White and Weaver, but there's Kristin Chenoweth, Jamie Lee Curtis and Victor Garber! Sure, there's a certain amount of cheese, but it looks like just the right amount.

22. She respects her fans.
As noted before, Bell is queen of the geeks, and she respects her loyal fans. "I love fanboys and am so flattered to be accepted amongst a group of fans that are so intelligent and specific about what they like," Bell told Marvel.com. "To me, fanboys are inspiring because they cannot be told to like something. It's a hard group to please. It has to be smart. They aren't ever really trying to be accepted or keep up with the mainstream. They like what they like because they like it. I think that's awesome."

23. This picture.

24. She's cautious about the roles she picks. Bell told the AV Club that she never wants to play the victim. "I think women are portrayed as the victim in so many things, and I really like women with strength-although I feel now I may have gone overboard by playing so many strong, sassy women," she said.

25. She's got sick moves.

26. She idolizes Amy Poehler and wants to be like Catherine O'Hara. Bell told the AV Club that she respects the careers of actresses like Claire Danes and Anne Hathaway, but that she also loves the perky 'Parks and Recreation' star. "I've always idolized Amy Poehler, because I think she's the best of the best as far as female comedy, and Kristen Wiig," she said. "Probably though, if I had to look at an example of an entire career, I'd say Catherine O'Hara."

27. She takes everything in stride. Bell is often mistaken for other celebrities -- Lauren Conrad for one -- but, she takes it in stride, especially when people mistake her for a youth. "I'm carded for R-rated movies. And I get talked down to a lot. When I try to go rent a car or buy an airplane ticket or other stuff adults do, I get 'Okaaaaaay, honey.' I remember when I was 18, getting crayons in a restaurant." [AskMen]

28. 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall.'
Arguably Bell's biggest (and best) silver screen role (so far -- I have high hopes for 'You Again' and 'Burlesque'), she made the title character a human being, despite the fact the movie was all about how she hurt Peter (Jason Segel). She was funny, mean and all around entertaining in a really good movie that could've been awful.

29. This quote on 'Veronica Mars' being shelved randomly midseason for a CW series about the pop singing group the Pussycat Dolls. The series was about finding the next Pussycat Doll and Bell told the Washington Post this: "Clearly it was an emergency in the Pussycat Doll department."

30. 'Veronica Mars.' Oh, come on. This is why we all know who Kristen Bell is. 'Veronica Mars' was without a doubt one of the best TV shows to ever exist. Yes, ever. Season 1 was a masterpiece with pitch-perfect storytelling and acting by Bell. As noted above, she gave Veronica the sass and snark the character is famous for. Bell has said she'd do a 'VM' film and she truly appreciated the role.

When I watched the first episode of Covert Affairs, it seemed like the continuation of Veronica Mars. Not having Kristen Bell as the lead pretty much ruined the show for me as soon as I realized how similar it was to the VM season 4 trailer.

Happy birthday Kristen, may all your dreams come true. :)

Seeing Covert Affairs, I kinda wish it was her in the lead instead of Piper Perabo.

The blue bridesmaid dress she wore in "When in Rome" - one of the sexiest things I've EVER seen.
