Dustin Clare to Star in 'Spartacus' Prequel

It's been reported that Australian actor Dustin Clare has signed on for the lead role in Starz's epic new prequel, 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.'

Clare, best-known for his roles in Australian TV series 'Underbelly' and 'Satisfaction,' will play Gannicus, the champion gladiator in the House of Batiatus before the advent of Spartacus. He'll be joined by British actress Jaime Murray ('Dexter') playing a social climber in Capua, and Marisa Ramirez ('The Young and the Restless') playing a slave girl. 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' star Andy Whitfield -- who's been undergoing treatment for cancer -- will make a brief appearance in the series after he was cleared by doctors to return to work.

'Arena of the Gods' is set before Batiatus (John Hannah) becomes head of either the family or the gladiator training school, and it will follow the fortunes of the House of Batiatus as it struggles to earn the right for its gladiators to fight in championship bouts. As the lead gladiator, Gannicus will be pivotal to the house's success.

Production on the first six episodes will start in August, and the show will debut on Starz in January 2011. Filming of the second season of 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand,' which was delayed after Whitfield was diagnosed with cancer, is expected to begin straight after 'Gods of the Arena' wraps, and will air sometime in 2011. The exact number of episodes has not been confirmed.

If this means I get more of Lucy Lawless and John Hannah, I can't wait.
