'So You Think You Can Dance's Ashley Galvan: "I'll Be Back"

by Sharon Knolle, posted Jul 19th 2010 2:00PM
Last week, another promising dancer left 'So You Think You Can Dance,' thanks to an ill-timed injury.

Ashley Galvan's fractured rib forced her out of the competition despite being one of the judges' favorites and one of the only two girls still in the running in a season that's heavily favored the male contestants.

She talked to TV Squad the day after her emotional elimination about how close she's grown to the other dancers, how hard it was to leave and what she hopes to do next, including what her dream TV gig would be.

She also revealed how much pain she's currently in and the dance move that caused her injury. Whether we see her in the show's finale, on the season 7 tour or on season 8, she promised, "I'm going to be back."

How did your injury happen?

I injured myself probably the third week into the competition. I don't know exactly how it happened, but I do know that being lifted a lot in the same area probably triggered the injury.

When did you first started noticing the pain?
I was doing this one specific lift during the duet with Ade, the one where I go over his head and he drops me close to the ground. It was a really fun lift, but it was hard and that's when I started feeling the pain. It developed into a bruised rib and then further along the line, it went into a fractured rib.

How much pain are you in?
It's really painful but I'm trying not to think about the pain. I can't tolerate pain very well, but so far I'm hanging in there and I'm hoping that I get better fast.

How are you spending your days now?
I am currently just laying down because that's what the doctors told me to, they said a lot of rest would help the recovery process. I'll probably be catching up on a lot of TV shows that I missed.

Will we you see you in the audience at all or are you under strict orders to stay home?
I really hope I get to come back and watch -- hopefully that will be the finale, until then, I probably will be supporting from home so that I do get a quick recovery.

Will you return for season 8?
If I get asked to come back, I probably would yes. But then again, I don't know because I am looking forward to doing the tour.

If you get well in time, will you be on the season 7 tour?
If I do get better within four to five weeks then yes, I will be one of the people on tour for sure. The night of the elimination was first time that I was picked for the tour. I'm just hoping that that I get to go on and I get to get better.

Can you talk about the experience as a whole?
I just loved every moment of it. I got to grow as a dancer, I got to have new experiences like hip-hop and the the quickstep. I'm sad that I didn't get to do more of that. I had a great time on the show and I really hope that I get to continue somewhat in the business.

You guys all seem so bonded and close to each other. Did that make the experience better? And make it that much harder to leave?
We all connected very well and we are a family. When someone's injured, everybody's there for them, if someone's upset, everybody is there for them. We feed off of each other's energy and it was just an amazing thing. Now that I'm gone, they told me that it wasn't going to be the same without me and it's not going to be the same for me, [to not be able to be] a part of that anymore.

You and Robert especially seemed to have a really good rapport. Why do you think he's been in the Bottom Three so often?
Me and Robert are like best friends. He means a lot to me and to see him in the bottom that much... I didn't get it at all. He has a great personality and he's an amazing dancer and he was always there for me. I don't know what everybody didn't see in him, but he's been safe for the last two weeks and I hope he continues to do well and be safe in the competition.

What was your favorite part of the whole experience?
My favorite part was the contestants and being able to dance with the All-Stars. Everybody is so great and has this amazing personality. When you get so close to people, it's amazing and not to continue further is sad, but I'm rooting for them and I know that they're still going to put on a great show. And I'm going to be back.

After you recover and after the tour, what's next for you?
I'm hoping that I will be able to go on auditions for different jobs and continue my journey and hopefully get to work in movies and commercials and TV work. I'm hoping that someday I get to be on 'Glee.' That's my dream. I hope I get to do that.

Have you trained in acting as well?
I did, for about a year, I was trained in acting because that's something that I really wanted to do: I feel like acting will help me grow up and not be so shy anymore. I would like to continue with acting and see where that takes me.

Looking back on the show, how did it help you grow as a dancer?
They take people who they think will grow as a dancer, meaning trying different genres and trying to step out of their comfort zone. For the first three weeks, I didn't have that opportunity [to try new genres] but all of it has been stepping out of my comfort zone because I've never partnered before. It really opened my eyes that there is so much more to dancing than just dancing at a dance studio and being a competition dancer. I'm so grateful that I had opportunity to do the quickstep and do hip-hop and learn something from them.

What was your favorite dance?
The one by Dee Caspary that I did with Ade to "Cosmic Love." It was the first time where I got to loosen up as a dancer and not be so placed and not think about lines. I really just went for it and it felt amazing.

It was such a great moment when you admitted you might be in love. Are you?
Yes, I am still in love, yes.

It's not anyone on the show, is it?

I love all of them, but no, I was referring to my boyfriend.
