'Late Show': Steve Carell Plays Fife from His Dorky Battle-Reenactment Days (VIDEO)

'Late Show': Steve Carell Plays Fife from War-Reenactment DaysWow, Steve Carell was such a dork. (Unless you're majorly into Revolutionary War history. In which case: Hot!) He revealed on the 'Late Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) that the Carell men were avid members of a war-reenactment troupe in Massachusetts.

"I was in a fife and drum corps," he told David Letterman. "My father carried a musket, my brother was a drummer, and I was a fifer ... I did it for a few years -- and had no girlfriends during that time."

After this revelation, he pulled out a fife, "essentially, an 18th century flute" that would lead soldiers into battle. Though he hadn't played in 30 years, he gave the audience quite the scrappy performance.

Then the host further embarrassed Carell by unveiling his 1984 college graduation photo, which featured the actor sporting a not-so-stylish mustache. "You look older in this picture than you do now! How is that possible?" asked Letterman. Good question.

Steve was playing a tune called "The Moon and Seven Stars," a popular tune of the Colonial period, and a common "Jam Session" tune in the fife and drum world today. His fife looks fairly new --- maybe a "Model F" or a "Peeler" or possibly a "Sweet" fife. His mention of his F&D past on Letterman's show --- all for a few laughs, was certainly capped by a less than adequate performance -- albeit by his own admission. He has, after all, been away from the fife for 30 years. But his lack of social skills during that period of his life should not be attributed to his playing in a Fife and Drum Corps, for those of us who continue to teach, play and enjoy this music know the strength and worth of such a noble gathering of friends, comrades, and extended family! Rather, he may have served himself better by remembering with a bit of humility, the fellowship and commitment to a worthwhile hobby that encouraged him to step up, stand out, and develop that outgoing personality that would eventually give him the edge he needed to break into the much more popular ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS. Good on you, Steve.

The Office is a show that you have to watch several times to get the subtleties of the characters - they are not necessarily dysfunctional - they are real and have real faults. I love the guy that decided he hates the show after he "watched every episode". Yeah, it's dry humor, and subtle. You have to pay attention and maybe use your mind a little bit. I guess to much to ask of some. Also there is no laugh track or live audience to tell you when to laugh - throws some of you off.

I've watched every episode of THE OFFICE, and I can't understand why people think this show is funny.
It seems that our definition of comedy has evolved into something desperate. We find incompetent, selfish and dysfunctional people as "funny". Just watch the characters on THE OFFICE, THE MIDDLE, MODERN FAMILY, THE SIMPSONS, (the list goes on) and you will see one common factor in the "funny" characters. They are all dysfunctional. We find this funny? I realize this is fiction and it's not real, and it's supposed to be funny. Our humor and fiction reflect our reality. Just compare these shows to the shows we used to watch in the fifties and sixties. The characters of these older shows did not have to be idiots or incompetent to be funny. I just think it's a sad commentary on what is going on in America today. No wonder the muslims think we are a nation of degenerates! Funny indeed.- gregg in Sarasota, FL
