HBO's 'The Miraculous Year' is piling on an already star-studded cast, adding Susan Sarandon, according to EW.com's The Ausiello Files. Sarandon will play Patty Atwood, the "director/choreographer of the play-within-the-show." The actress is no stranger to television, having made a guest appearance on 'ER' last year, and has appeared on 'Rescue Me.'
Earlier this month, Lee Pace ('Pushing Daisies') and Linus Roache ('Law & Order') were added to the cast, joining Hope Davis, Frank Langella, Patti LuPone, and Tony winner Eddie Redmayne. Norbert Leo Butz plays the self-destructive Broadway composer at the heart of the story.
Tony winner John Logan and Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow are producing -- Logan wrote the pilot, which Bigelow will direct. Ausiello, who continues to get the scoop on this show, includes an extensive cast list, with a quick character description, in the post with the Sarandon news.
There are a lot of Broadway veterans in the cast, and the story is said to be loosely based on legendary composer Stephen Sondheim. Logan is credited with the screenplay for 'Sweeney Todd,' which was based on the Sondheim classic. According to Broadway.com, the pilot will take aim at some of Broadway's biggest hits in recent years, including 'Wicked.'
