Anson Mount to Star in 'Hell on Wheels'

AMC has done so well with its period drama 'Mad Men' that the network has decided to go back even further in history. According to Deadline Hollywood, AMC has chosen the two leads for its drama pilot 'Hell on Wheels,' a Western set during the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. Anson Mount will star opposite female lead Dominique McElligott.

Cullen is described as a fearless character with a dark past. But his baggage is much darker, and his cold stare is sure to make Don Draper look like he's wearing a pink, frilly dress.

A former slave owner and a Confederate soldier, Cullen is on a mission to kill the Union soldiers who raped and murdered his wife. Will this be the next feel-good hit of the year? Only if you're David Simon.

For money to fund his avenging, Cullen works on the Nebraska prairie's 'Hell on Wheels' portion of the transcontinental railroad. Now you understand where the name comes from -- it's not a 'Sons of Anarchy' rip-off.

Irish actress McElligott has been cast as Lily Bell, a woman caring for her ill husband, a surveyor tasked with mapping the railroad's course. Rapper-actor Common also has a starring role as Elam, a freed slave heading west while working on the railroad.

Without even seeing the pilot, two plot points are certain: First, sexual tension will occur between Lily Bell and Cullen at some point. And second, Cullen will dislike Elam at first, but learn to respect him through hard work. Uh, should that have been prefaced with a spoiler alert?
