Bob Barker Talks About Protecting Whales on 'Huckabee' (VIDEO)

by AOL TV Staff, posted Jul 28th 2010 7:49PM
Bob Barker is a strong advocate for animal rights; in particular, he's an animal-rights activist, which means he has puts his name on the line and his money where his mouth is.

For years he ended 'The Price Is Right' by urging people to get their pets neutered; in 1987 he stepped down as host of the Miss USA/Universe Pageants because that organization wouldn't eliminate fur prizes. In January of this year, he donated $5 million to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to purchase a ship to thwart illegal Japanese whaling operations.

On Wednesday's 'The Huckabee Show' (weekdays, syndicated), Barker appeared with Chuck Swift, captain of the MV Bob Barker, the anti-whaling ship named after the game-show host, and the pair discussed the international whaling treaties broken by the Japanese, Barker's donation to the Sea Shepherd society, and the successes they have made in saving whales from destruction. (Whales, by the way, are mammals).

The Minke whales the Japanese are hunting in the Antarctic are an abundant and widespread species.

The only person arrested and convicted as a result of the SSCS intervention in Antarctica this year was Peter Bethune, a member of the SSCS. Bethunes incompetence also led to the loss of the ship he was in charge of, the "Ady Gil". The wreckage of Ady Gil is still polluting Antarctic waters.

Which law is it the "illegal" Japanese whaling operations are breaking and what gives an American animal rights organization the authority to enforce laws in Antarctica?
