CW Executive Session: 'Supernatural,' 'Vampire Diaries' and More - TCA Report

by Laura Prudom, posted Jul 29th 2010 7:20PM
Dawn OstroffCW president of entertainment Dawn Ostroff was on hand to answer questions about the network's fall schedule Thursday afternoon and gave a few interesting tidbits regarding the future of 'Supernatural,' the success of 'The Vampire Diaries' and their strategies for online streaming.

As we previously reported at Comic-Con, season six of 'Supernatural' will be seen as a throwback to season 1. Show creator Eric Kripke will still be involved in the day-to-day running of the show along with new showrunner Sera Gamble and executive producer Bob Singer. The CW is "very excited" about the creative direction of the show this season, and Ostroff suggested that season 6 might be even stronger creatively than last year's ratings-boosting run.

• The groundbreaking success of 'The Vampire Diaries' will help provide a strong lead-in for 'Nikita', though Ostroff hopes 'Nikita' will attract a different audience to help boost the ratings of both shows.

More after the jump!

• The 15th cycle of 'America's Next Top Model' will feature one of the most coveted prizes in the fashion industry: a cover shoot with Italian Vogue, which she described as the most influential fashion publication in the world.

• No half-hour comedies are actively in development; summer series '18-to-Life' is a Canadian import. If that does well creatively, Ostroff suggested that they might examine further comedies.

• Will Michael Rosenbaum return to 'Smallville' for its final season? Ostroff said, "We've left the door open. We hope he'll come back but we don't know whether it'll happen. It'll be a really thrilling last season for them. Everyone wants to give the audience a really fulfilling season finale. The big villain this year is Darksied, Brainiac will be back, Supergirl will be back and Hawkman back -- there's a lot of exciting stuff planned."

• What did Ostroff like about 'Hellcats' and 'Nikita'? They'd been trying to develop "a female empowering action show" for awhile, and 'Nikita' felt more realistic than many scripts they received and featured a female character who had a passion, a reason for being driven. 'Hellcats' was an underdog, a script they developed with no sense of what it would be; Ostroff was surprised that they liked the final script as much as they did. Hoping to capitalize on the popularity of 'Glee', Ostroff cited the upcoming big production numbers in every episode, since audiences like watching the cheer and dance sequences.

• Ostroff would like to see 'One Tree Hill' come back for another year if the audience is still around after next season.

• To fill the gap that will be left by 'Smallville' when this season ends, Ostroff confirmed that they've started discussing other DC Comics superhero adaptations.

• Creatively, 'Supernatural' will go back to the monster of the week format, while also dealing with Sam and Dean's mother's side of the family -- storylines will involve the Campbell family. Ostroff thinks that 'Supernatural' will go on for many more years, "everyone feels that there's a lot more juice in the characters," she said.
