'So You Think You Can Dance' - '2 of 6 Eliminated' Recap

by Michael Pascua, posted Jul 30th 2010 1:48AM
The bottom three: Lauren, Billy, and Jose(S07E19) 'So You Think You Can Dance' finally has it's first double elimination, which is the only season that it would have worked. Nigel announces that the winner this season will also gain fame as the first Gatorade dance representative and be part of their fall campaign. As long as it wasn't Jose as the cover-boy of all dancers, I'll be fine.

Group Performance - Mia finally gets to choreograph a routine and I will say, it was good that she got a break because it's more interesting to watch after the string of boring Mandy Moore routines we've been watching this season. Jose is actually performing tonight as well, meaning that his groin must not have been bad. It's interesting to see that Lauren is missing from the routine with Allison and all the men, but according to Lauren's father's Twitter account, she was suffering from dehydration.

With only six contestants, Kent and Jose begin the elimination and Jose is the first in the bottom three. Kent's family flails a picture of Kent's head on a stick in support. They are followed by Billy and Adechike; Adechike is safe, while Billy is in the bottom three. Of the final two contestants, Robert gets the most audience support and is shocked when he's safe. Lauren makes the bottom three for the first time.

Guest Performance - 'Step Up 3D' Dancers - Adam Shankman's baby gets some extra pimping. Luckily for the show they can try to explain that former contestant Tony from season 5 is dancing. Clearly a year of exposure to the dance community has helped Tony grow immensely. Overall, I feel as though the whole thing would be more dynamic in the theaters, but seeing the dance in portions and not as interesting angles, it just looks like a high school talent show. Watching the guy in the middle continue spinning past the music makes Jose look really bad.

Guest Musician - Christian TV, "When She Turns 18" - Having an endorsement by Britney Spears really doesn't mean that much anymore. I've never heard of the guy before, but his squeaky vocals, Vanilla Ice fashion sense, and questionable hairstyle really didn't win me over. Sorry, but he needed more time to practice before making the leap to live television. There was a part of me that liked that his backup dancers were supposed to be synchronized swimmers, but that was about it. I thought how he stood at the end was really awkward.

Solos

Jose - Jose has a mastery of ground work and his yoga has helped with creating strong poses, but he can't spin on his head. When he did, he slipped right out.

Billy - At first I thought the clothes would have been distracting, but he used the outfit really well. I liked the control in the beginning with the contrast of almost frantic dancing. He used his time well.

Lauren - Lauren does a great job putting as many dance steps in as possible. I'm not sure if she really got the spirit of "Let's Get it On" except for the rolling on the floor, but she did a little bit of everything.

Musical Performance
- Allison Iraheta "Don't Waste the Pretty" - I always suspected Allison would have done a bit better in the music scene because she had a distinctive voice during 'American Idol,' but I guess she never connected except as Adam Lambert's opening act. Allison was putting her all in the routine, but I don't think the song is dynamic enough to fit into our mainstream music sound. The whole routine screamed 'Dancing With the Stars' guest performance, where the performers would sing on the stage and then guest dancers would perform on the floor; except in this case where there was no floor left to dance, so they were relegated to the side.

The judges are unanimous and this will be the last time the judges' decisions will count. To Nigel, Jose has learned multiple routines in a very short time and has mastered them well. He's turned out better because of his personality. Billy has the most applause, even though he's been in the bottom three for five weeks. Lauren's first time in the bottom three and she's safe. It means Billy and Jose are safe. Magically, both of their montages are merged together and their best moments both look better than I ever remembered.

Next week, America finally gets control of the vote. One knew that if America had the vote three weeks ago, Billy would have been gone. I'm sad to see him go, but I'm sure he will do fine in the dance community. Jose on the other hand could do a really good job forming a crew and going on either 'America's Got Talent' or 'America's Best Dance Crew.' I think the teamwork will help them the most. Do you think Billy and Jose deserved to be eliminated? Leave comments below.

I had predicted that Billy and Jose would going home. But still I don't know why people didn't like Billy. C'mon, his such a brilliant dancer. His have perfect line. Too bad I couldn't vote, If I could, definitely I will vote for Billy. As for Jose, well we all know that's the reason he still stayed is his charisma, so it's time for the jury to let him go.
Kind a surprise of Lauren, but as you all said, no way they would send the only girl left home.

Was surprised to see Lauren in the bottom 3. I knew there was no way they would send the only girl left home though, so I knew they would send off Billy and Jose.

I think Billy is a good dancer (though he started off only mediocre on the show). The dancer that doesn't really do much for me (aside from Jose) is Robert. I think it IS because of his goofy personality (as Nigel mentioned last week?).

Speaking of seeing Kent's head on a stick...

Of the four that are left, I hope Robert wins. He won't, of course. But if he comes in second I will still be pleased.

This was the second group routine Mia choreographed this year.

I find it odd that people assume their opinions are fact. Billy was a great dancer sure, but there is something about him that doesn't do it for me, and apparently i am not the only one. Now according to two of the posters here that means I am wrong and 'out of it?' Nope, that is MY opinion and last time I checked I was allowed to have one.

Billy didn't click for me, and since the one I wanted to win is out with an actualy injury, I will just have to turn my attentions to the four left.

Yeah, and one of them actually reasons that if you didn't like Adam Lambert's incessant screaming and over-glammed out versions of every song that you somehow don't have taste. Billy didn't deserve to stay after last week, no matter how good he was this week. Does a Boxer get a world title if he sits out a round? Does a golfer win a tournament if he skips a hole? Can a pitcher take an inning off? So why does Billy get to take a week off when he was cleared by the Doctors?

Plus, Billy was terrible in his Hip-Hop routines, was weak in a lot of partnering and his highly effeminate style does not appeal to a wide range of people. His solos were incredible and brilliant and unique, and his lines and body control are simply freakish, but this show is about finding someone who can become a pop culture dancing star.

Democracy isn't about finding the best, it's about finding the most popular. Otherwise, would we have seen George Bush v Al Gore, Bush v Kerry and Obama v McCain in the last three elections? Clearly there were better candidates out there for both sides, but the winners were the ones who connected with the people most. Like the dancers.

Lauren's solo was the worst of the three. Jose's style of B-Boying is not the same as the Step-Up Guy or Jabberwockeez, he's a slow and smooth B-Boy who does some pretty spectacular things. Billy's solo once again proved that his "knee injury" was merely put on to give himself another week without having to do the stepping routine.

I predicted it'd be Billy and Jose going home last night. For the other posters above me, it's not America's Best Dancer, it's America's Favorite Dancer... and Billy hasn't had the votes for 5 weeks now. I personally think he's great, but he didn't resonate with the mass voting block.

I think it was Jose's time to go, he was being out-done in nearly every routine in terms of technique. He should be proud of himself, his hard work and his charisma took him a long, long way.

And as for Billy, his Wednesday night performances were his absolute best, and were topping my list of best for the season, so if he wasn't getting the votes after that night, he just wasn't going to get the votes. So the judges made the right decision in letting him go.

While there are a few very talented and skilled performers and dancers this season ... Billy is a gifted artist and in a totally different class unto himself (along, perhaps, with Alex who left earlier in the season). America gets it wrong again. Just as they did with Adam Lambert On American Idol. It's disheartening when folks vote solely with their emotions and not with astute eyes and thinking judgement.

Tonight's results were absolute crap. I'll preface this by saying that neither Billy nor Lauren deserved to be in the bottom 3. The only reason Lauren was allowed to stay in the competition in place of Billy is that she was the last girl left. Lauren is a beautiful dancer, but Billy is a freaking artist and was, by far, the best dancer left on the show. The voting system really needs to change. This "power voting" bullshit REALLY needs to be dealt with and they need to limit votes per phone line.
