'So You Think You Can Dance' - '2 of 6 Eliminated' Recap
(S07E19) 'So You Think You Can Dance' finally has it's first double elimination, which is the only season that it would have worked. Nigel announces that the winner this season will also gain fame as the first Gatorade dance representative and be part of their fall campaign. As long as it wasn't Jose as the cover-boy of all dancers, I'll be fine.Group Performance - Mia finally gets to choreograph a routine and I will say, it was good that she got a break because it's more interesting to watch after the string of boring Mandy Moore routines we've been watching this season. Jose is actually performing tonight as well, meaning that his groin must not have been bad. It's interesting to see that Lauren is missing from the routine with Allison and all the men, but according to Lauren's father's Twitter account, she was suffering from dehydration.
With only six contestants, Kent and Jose begin the elimination and Jose is the first in the bottom three. Kent's family flails a picture of Kent's head on a stick in support. They are followed by Billy and Adechike; Adechike is safe, while Billy is in the bottom three. Of the final two contestants, Robert gets the most audience support and is shocked when he's safe. Lauren makes the bottom three for the first time.
Guest Performance - 'Step Up 3D' Dancers - Adam Shankman's baby gets some extra pimping. Luckily for the show they can try to explain that former contestant Tony from season 5 is dancing. Clearly a year of exposure to the dance community has helped Tony grow immensely. Overall, I feel as though the whole thing would be more dynamic in the theaters, but seeing the dance in portions and not as interesting angles, it just looks like a high school talent show. Watching the guy in the middle continue spinning past the music makes Jose look really bad.
Guest Musician - Christian TV, "When She Turns 18" - Having an endorsement by Britney Spears really doesn't mean that much anymore. I've never heard of the guy before, but his squeaky vocals, Vanilla Ice fashion sense, and questionable hairstyle really didn't win me over. Sorry, but he needed more time to practice before making the leap to live television. There was a part of me that liked that his backup dancers were supposed to be synchronized swimmers, but that was about it. I thought how he stood at the end was really awkward.
Solos
Jose - Jose has a mastery of ground work and his yoga has helped with creating strong poses, but he can't spin on his head. When he did, he slipped right out.
Billy - At first I thought the clothes would have been distracting, but he used the outfit really well. I liked the control in the beginning with the contrast of almost frantic dancing. He used his time well.
Lauren - Lauren does a great job putting as many dance steps in as possible. I'm not sure if she really got the spirit of "Let's Get it On" except for the rolling on the floor, but she did a little bit of everything.
Musical Performance - Allison Iraheta "Don't Waste the Pretty" - I always suspected Allison would have done a bit better in the music scene because she had a distinctive voice during 'American Idol,' but I guess she never connected except as Adam Lambert's opening act. Allison was putting her all in the routine, but I don't think the song is dynamic enough to fit into our mainstream music sound. The whole routine screamed 'Dancing With the Stars' guest performance, where the performers would sing on the stage and then guest dancers would perform on the floor; except in this case where there was no floor left to dance, so they were relegated to the side.
The judges are unanimous and this will be the last time the judges' decisions will count. To Nigel, Jose has learned multiple routines in a very short time and has mastered them well. He's turned out better because of his personality. Billy has the most applause, even though he's been in the bottom three for five weeks. Lauren's first time in the bottom three and she's safe. It means Billy and Jose are safe. Magically, both of their montages are merged together and their best moments both look better than I ever remembered.
Next week, America finally gets control of the vote. One knew that if America had the vote three weeks ago, Billy would have been gone. I'm sad to see him go, but I'm sure he will do fine in the dance community. Jose on the other hand could do a really good job forming a crew and going on either 'America's Got Talent' or 'America's Best Dance Crew.' I think the teamwork will help them the most.
