Soap Casting News: Melissa Reeves Returns to 'Days' ... and More

by Allison Waldman, posted Aug 2nd 2010 2:00PM
melissa_reeves_nbc_days_of_our_livesThe soap world is buzzing with hot news, including a former sitcom star -- from a classic show -- turning up on 'The Young and the Restless,' and a fan favorite coming back to 'Days of Our Lives' on a permanent basis. Oh, and yes, yes, yes, we're only a week away from Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo making her splashy return to General Hospital.' Check out what's been happening around the dial with our weekly Soap casting wrap-up.

Welcome Home, Melissa Reeves
One of the most beloved actors to ever appear on 'Days of Our Lives,' Melissa Reeves, is coming back to the show to resume her role as Jennifer Horton Deveraux. She'll be on air in September. Recently, Reeves was on the soap during the death of Grandma Alice (the late Frances Reid) and to help Hope (Kristian Alfonso) through a tough emotional break up with Bo (Peter Reckell).

Reeves grew up on 'Days,' having been on the show from 1985-95, and then again from 2000-2006. During her recent visit, the character was on the phone with her spouse, Jack, but whether or not Matthew Ashford will be returning to the soap along with her has yet to been announced. Her real-life husband, actor Scott Reeves, is currently on 'General Hospital' as Dr. Steven Webber.

There's a wedding in the works on 'The Young and the Restless,' and it's going to be a really amazing ceremony. Billy (Billy Miller) and Victoria (Amelia Heinle) will be having a 1950s themed wedding -- something very 'Rock Around the Clock' -- and to add to the ambiance, actress Elinor Donahue has been cast as the minister.

That's right, Betty Anderson -- nicknamed Princess -- from 'Father Knows Best,' will be asking Billy and Victoria if they take each other in wedded bliss. The wedding will be Wednesday, Sept. 8, but don't expect Papa Newman to give the bride away. Victor (Eric Braeden) despises Billy.

Scott Hamner, the soap's co-head writer said of Donahue's casting: "Relationship and romance is partly about trying to achieve a retro-fantasy of better, simpler times -- bringing Elinor on amps up that homage to the perfect family. We have great admiration for Elinor. She's an iconic part of our collective psyche and it seemed like we couldn't do it without her. We love her!"

'Y&R' Resurrects Hope and Paroles Deacon

This should be interesting... On 'The Young and the Restless,' actress Signy Coleman will be appearing as Hope, Adam's (Michael Muhney) mother -- his dead mother. Hope is not coming back to life. She will be appearing on Aug.13 and 16 in some kind of fantasy sequence which are meant to explain why Adam is the way he is. Right now that would be evil and nasty.

Also on 'Y&R,' Sean Kanan has returned as Deacon. He made his first appearance last Friday, turning up in the rain to help Phyllis (Michelle Stafford). However, he's going to be sticking around for a while and there are reports that the duo will be having a torrid affair.

As the days creep closer to the end of 'As the World Turns,' it's nice to report that two-time Emmy winner Cady McClain will be among the stars on the 'ATWT' finale. She'll be back as Rosanna Cabot as of Sept. 14, and will remain on the canvas till the end of the soap the following week.

Two More 'Days' Notes
Remember the NBC sitcom 'Third Rock from the Sun'? It was an Emmy favorite for a while and one of the funniest actors from that show was French Stewart as Harry Solomon. Stewart will be taking a shot at daytime, appearing on 'Days of Our Lives' in a brief, guest turn. Watch for him at the end of August.

Robin Mattson, one of the all-time best soap actors ever, is joining 'Days.' From her time on 'General Hospital' as Heather Webber, Janet Green on 'All My Children' and Gina Blake on 'Santa Barbara,' Mattson is a daytime gem. She will be portraying Lee, a woman connected to Stacy Haiduk's character, the prison warden. Hmm...could this all have something to do with Hope confessing that she tried to kill Bo?
