Bret MichaelsHe's done more than his fair share of scoping out the ladies in his rock star life and as the lookin'-for-love star of 'Rock of Love,' and now Bret Michaels is putting his, um, skills to use in a beauty pageant.

The rocker and reigning 'Celebrity Apprentice' winner will join 'Today' correspondent Natalie Morales in hosting the Miss Universe Pageant on Aug. 23.

The 59th annual pageant, produced and owned by Michaels' 'Apprentice' boss Donald Trump, will air live from Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. Australian singer/songwriter Orianthi will perform her hit single 'According to You' during the pageant's swimsuit competition, while John Legend & The Roots will perform during the evening gown competition. The two-hour NBC show will feature more than 80 women from all over the world competing in swimsuit, evening gown and interview events.

The United States will be represented by Miss USA 2010, Rima Fakih, while the new Miss Universe will be crowned by 2009 winner Stefania Fernandez, from Venezuela.

As for Michaels, the pageant-hosting gig is just the latest in a string of appearances the singer has made since his much-publicized health woes last spring. Within a six-week period in April and May, Type I diabetic Michaels underwent an emergency appendectomy, suffered a brain hemorrhage and was discovered to have a hole in his heart. Miraculously, he has completely recovered from his three hospital stays.

Since then, he was named the 'Celebrity Apprentice' champ on May 23, performed on the 'American Idol' season finale, has reportedly been a contender for Simon Cowell's vacated seat at the 'AI' judges' table, and -- oopsie -- was on his tour bus July 21 when DeKalb County, Indiana Sheriff's Department personnel discovered marijuana on the bus.

Michaels, whose latest CD, 'Custom Built,' is in the top 10 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, will also star in a new VH1 reality series, 'Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It,' which will chronicle his life at home in Scottsdale with girlfriend Kristi Gibson and daughters Raine and Jorja. The show is scheduled to premiere this fall on the network that was also home to 'Rock of Love,' the show that sparked Michaels' pop culture resurgence.
