Shaq's Reality Show More Popular With Viewers than Last Season

by Scott Harris, posted Aug 5th 2010 10:35AM
It's been a big week for the Big Aristotle. Oh, sure, Shaquille O'Neal's last team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, may have fallen apart against the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals even faster than his relationship with departing star LeBron James deteriorated. But in a classic "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" moment, Shaq yesterday signed on with the Celtics and now, as proof that living well is the best revenge, it appears his prospects as a television star off the court may be as good as his chances for another ring on the court.

That's because, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the first numbers have come in for the second season premiere of 'Shaq VS' and the news is good: with a 1.9 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and an overall total of 5.4 million viewers, the episode was up 12 percent over last year and set a new high mark for the series.

Of course, those figures still aren't exactly Hall of Fame numbers, as they represent a significant dropoff from the 'Shaq VS' lead-in, 'Wipeout,' which drew a 2.9 rating and 8.8 million overall. Still, an increase is an increase and with five weeks left to build on this strong start, 'Shaq VS' looks poised to solidify itself as a serviceable summer stand-in for the network.

'Shaq VS' is a reality series that pits O'Neal against experts in a variety of competitive fields to see how your average 15-time all-star NBA center would fare taking on the best of the best in disciplines other than basketball. In the premiere, for example, he faced off against Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in an abbreviated NASCAR exhibition, while future episodes will see him in a cook-off with Rachel Ray and a dancing competition with Justin Bieber, among other things.

Here's a look at 'Shaq VS,' which airs on Tuesdays at 9ET:
