'So You Think You Can Dance' - 'The Top 4 Perform' Recap
(S07E20) 'So You Think You Can Dance' began on a giddy note after today's landmark legal reversal of Prop. 8, which prompted Adam Shankman to ask Nigel Lythgoe to marry him. (Nigel accepted, but then broke it off after they disagreed about Kent's disco routine.) Kent's overly bouncy disco was declared his "worst performance ever," a statement met with loud boos from the audience, but fear not, Kent fans. By the time the final routine of the night was danced, the Ohio boy was back on top, with an intensely emotional, contemporary routine choreographed by Travis Wall.
Kent danced again with his 'Damn Yankees' partner Neil, and the palpable heartbreak in the routine (which Travis admitted was very personal), made it feel like we were watching a real break-up. Mia was close to tears and Adam told a still-somber Kent: "If this were the finale, you would have just won."
Tomorrow night, the lowest vote-getter will go home and, as Cat pointed out, the judges are no longer in a position to save anyone. It's now all up to the voters.
Tyce Diorio sat in as a judge this week and choreographed the opening number from 'Guys and Dolls,' with just the four finalists. Afterward, he told Kent, "You really do stand out."
Lauren & Pasha -- Argentine Tango (Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrioneuvo) After their steamy tango, Cat commented, "I feel like I'm interrupting something," and Mia agreed: "It felt very voyeuristic and I liked that." Nigel praised the "passion, control and intensity." Tyce told Lauren she "met the choreography head-on" and was "excellent." Mia said, "You just became a woman" and that the whole room was "simmering." "That was art, baby," Adam declared.
We saw clips of what the contestants did before coming to the show: Lauren was a high school cheerleader and student body vice president, and she also taught young kids. "I get so bored so easily. I need to be constantly on the go," she explained, and she talked about how much she's grown this season.
AdéChiké & Lauren - Afro-Jazz (Sean Cheesman) Everyone decided they like happy AdéChiké better than the serious, brooding AdéChiké who started off on the show, but he was still too stiff for Nigel and Mia, who advised him to "loosen up." Tyce was left wanting more and Mia sighed, "I wasn't fond of that." Adam advised him, "Forget we're all here and just dance for your life."
Robert & Anya - Viennese Waltz (Jonathan Roberts) Nigel liked Robert's carriage and thought he danced "superbly." Tyce said Robert "wore it like a suit," to which Mia added, "an Armani suit." She told Robert, "You're the prince of this season," but urged him to "relax and enjoy the ride." Adam told him, "You were brilliant" and every bit as good as ballroom expert Anya.
Robert's clip showcased his goofy side, showing him clowning with his stepdad and four roommates, one of whom is Channing Cooke from last season.
Kent & Courtney -- Disco (Doriana Sanchez) Kent, who admitted he's yet to see the inside of a nightclub, knew very little about disco except that it involved "shiny clothes." Nigel complimented Kent that the dance (despite not controlling his face) wasn't cheesy, but he was the only judge who thought so. Tyce found it "good," but wished he'd done more research. Mia was booed when she said, "That was a little rough for me." She didn't like Kent's solo bits and called it "the worst performance for me this season." Adam encouraged the audience to boo him as well since he agreed with Mia.
More footage from Wapakoneta, Ohio, as we met Kent's "country crew" and learned that he'd been an avid soccer player, but quit to concentrate on dance. "There aren't any male dancers around here. There's barely any girl dancers around here," he said and vowed not to let Hollywood change him.
Lauren & Ade - Jazz (Sean Cheesman) Lauren was called on again to be a smoldering femme fatale, one Cat compared to a James Bond villain. Nigel was impressed -- as were we -- by a very tricky lift and said he hoped we'll see her in the finale. Tyce wanted more "ferociousness." Mia agreed that the sexual chemistry was lacking, but that Lauren is a "beast." Adam simply said, "I want to hire you."
AdéChiké & Kathryn -- Contemporary (Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhodan) Nigel thought AdéChiké had "lost his wind" towards the end of the challenging routine, choreographed by two of his mentors. He focused on the positive in what sounded like a farewell speech, a note echoed by the rest of the judges. Tyce wanted more "width and depth" but congratulated AdéChiké on how far he's gotten in this competition. Mia was also disappointed, saying she felt AdéChiké could be a superhero of dance but only saw glimpses through his exhaustion. Adam praised his growth, saying, "I'm just super proud."
In his clip, AdéChiké shed tears while talking about what he went through trying to be a dancer growing up in Brooklyn. After the clip was shown, he was just as emotional, saying, "I'm just so grateful and completely humbled by this experience. No matter what the outcome is, I thank everybody."
Robert & Dominic -- Hip-Hop (Tabitha and Napoleon) Nigel asked Dominic whether he's going on the tour, because he'd love to see this crazy clown routine again. He told Robert that once again, he was "brilliant." Tyce said, "You really showed up to this piece. You made it magic." Mia proclaimed it "dope" and told Robert he had an amazing evening. Adam told Dominic, "Rob just outdanced yo' ass."
Kent & Neil -- Contemporary (Travis Wall) The best buds from the 'Damn Yankees' routine were now bitter enemies after Neil literally stabbed Kent in the back. If the disco number was Kent's least mature routine, this had to be his best and most finely acted. Nigel called the routine "chilling" and told Kent, "You just booked a place in the finale." Tyce could only say over and over again, "Are you kidding me? Amazing. Fantastic." A choked-up Mia said, "It's the first time that I can't find words." She called the combination of Kent, Neil and Travis "perfect."
The judges and AdéChiké himself seem to think he's going home tomorrow. Will the voters agree? Do you? Might Robert, who's spent more time in the Bottom Three, fall short of the finale? Or will this really be the all-boys season with last girl standing Lauren getting the heave-ho? Kent, despite his so-so disco routine, seems as sure a bet as ever.
