Wyclef Jean Announces Haitian Presidential Bid on CNN; Sean Penn Hasn't Seen Him in Haiti for Six Months (VIDEO)
It's official: Musical artist and erstwhile Fugee Wyclef Jean is, in fact, running for president of Haiti. "This is my first time announcing it live," Jean confirmed to Wolf Blitzer on 'Larry King Live' (weeknights, 9PM on CNN) on location in Port-au-Prince. "I feel that me running, it brings a neutral situation, meaning that Wyclef Jean can sit with any political party, have a conversation. I'm coming in neutral ... I represent the voice of the youth."
And while his fans and the youth may flock to support this Haiti-born musician, actor and activist Sean Penn had some strong words both in response to Jean's announcement, and on behalf of the earthquake-ravaged country.
"I'm not accusing Wyclef Jean of being an opportunist; I don't know the man," Penn began. "One of the reasons I don't know very much about Wyclef Jean is that I haven't seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I've been in Haiti."
"I think he has an important voice," Penn continued. "I hope he doesn't sacrifice that voice by taking the eye off the very devastating realities on the ground, and the very difficult strategic future that it's got in putting it back together."
