The 'Lost' Epilogue: Spoilers Are Here!

by Chris Harnick, posted Aug 9th 2010 5:00PM
LostOver the weekend, the 12-minute 'New Man In Charge' epilogue of 'Lost' leaked on the Internet. You probably watched it. We refrained from posting it because as we predicted, it's been pulled from the Web.

I'm sure if you search hard enough you can find it, but we've got all the details you'll need AND a clip. What more can do you want?

The epilogue will be featured on the season 6 DVD set of 'Lost' and the complete series collection due out Aug. 24.

Needless to say, SPOILER ALERT.

Now, what you don't see is a whole lot of answers.

Ben shows the Dharma guys a video that explains A LOT including the answers to the following questions:

Why can't women give birth on the island?
All the electromagnetism.

What the heck was up with the Hurley bird?
It was a genetically altered bird.

What was Room 23?
The Dharma Initiative used it to brainwash Hostiles after they were questioned about Jacob.

Where's Walt?

At Santa Rosa under a pseudonym. Hurley and Ben know Walt's special and they have a job for him. The duo bust him out and go on their merry way.

What's the job?

We may never know.

I thought it was excellent, personally.

Great to see Ben and Hurley again! They were two of my favorites on the series...

I don't know if I was misinformed, but I expected to see more of what they did ON the island. Nonetheless, I had a sappy emotional response to the finale and was overly concerned about Hurley never being allowed to leave the island again. In that aspect, I was happy to see that he wasn't confined to the island.

And to answer the question of what job they want Walt for...it coincides with everyone asking why Michael wasn't with everyone else in the finale. It's safe to assume that he's joined the whispering spirits who are stuck on the island...it's implied that they want Walt to use his powers (if that's what you'd call it) to help free them.

Saw it and found it to be "cute" but was unimpressed with its "explanations". Though it was funny when one of the Dharma Logistics warehouse guys yelled to Ben as a proxy for all of us, "We deserve answers!"

We get most of our "answers" via a scratchy, audio-skipping orientation film for the Hydra station. It comes off as a little too pat, but what are we to expect with such a short epilogue.

Thanks for the [feeble] effort Cuse & Lindelof but it doesn't make up for the shafting we all felt for Season 6 and its finale. Namaste.

I feel there was more answers than that...

Who/what caused the Pallet Drop in Season Two?
-Guys working in a DHARMA warehouse in Guam were instructed to release pallet drops over the past twenty years based on automated "launch windows" sent to them from The Lamp Post station.

Why did Pierre Chang use aliases?
-As stated in the video, if people leaked his name, he would be forced to do it for further videos.

What was the Hurley Bird?
-It was a hybrid species created by the DHARMA Initiative and then released into the wild for monitoring their behavior and how they'd adapt to the unique Island properties.

Why did the DHARMA Initiative use Polar Bears?
-Polar bears possess a keen sense of memory and adaptability which made them prime subjects for experiments on electromagnetism that would be taken place at the Orchid.

Why was the Wheel that moved the Island below freezing temperatures, especially when we see in "Across the Sea" that it was originally a normal well?
-As Pierre Chang begins to explain before being cut-off, the chamber was made to match the Polar Bear's comfort in cold temperatures, most likely to help with their studies.

How did the Polar Bear skeleton wind up in Tunisia with a DHARMA collar?
-As made clear in the video, when it was time for the bears to move to the next stage of experimenting, they would be tranquilized, fitted with the collars, and then sent to the Orchid for electromagnetism studies (which involved the FDW Chamber). As we saw in the show, turning the wheel leads you to Tunisia.

What caused the Pregnancy Issues?
-As Pierre says in the video, electromagnetism has an affect on early term gestation. The amount of electromagnetism at the Orchid could harm the Polar Bears if they were present. This makes it clear that the Pregnancy Issues for the Island came after the Incident, where a much larger pocket of electromagnetism existed, and would continually well up until being dispersed every 108 minutes. The Pregnancy Issues were caused due to Electromagnetic Radiation from the pocket of energy beneath the Swan.

What was Room 23?
-The DHARMA used it to interrogate Hostiles about their way of life, their origins, and, most importantly, their worship of Jacob. After, they would inject a drug in their neck, and put on the video. This video, in combination with the drugs, would create an amnesia on the Hostile so they would forget all about their interrogation.

What exactly was Jacob?
-Jacob used to be a human before becoming the protector of the Island. Making him an Island Deity.

What happened to Walt?
-He is in Santa Rosa hospital, dealing with the emotional trauma of the Island as well as having to pretend to be someone else (Keith Johnson) his entire life after the Island.

Will Michael always be stuck on the Island, unable to move on as one of the Whispers?
-No. As Ben said, Walt will be brought to the Island to help his father.

Why does Ben and Hurley want Walt with them?
-Because he has work to do, as well as the Island being where he is truly supposed to be. They have a job for him.

What is the job?
-Aside from things like helping his father, Hurley and Ben most likely are thinking about making Walt the new protector once Hurley and Ben decide their time has ended.

Personally, I thought it was a rather effective ending. The first half being more to satisfy the answer-crazy fans, while the second half was more for the character-crazy fans. I liked it.
