Most Obvious Reality TV Finalists

by Jane Murphy, posted Aug 11th 2010 5:00PM
Kent, So You Think You Can DanceReality competitions depend on suspense, but what if there's a contestant so clearly a contender to win from the get-go?

If producers are lucky, a player who is a gimme will be so talented (Mama Sox on 'American Idol') or so hot (Miles on 'Work of Art') or so Kent ('So You Think You Can Dance's' small-town favorite) viewers will want to follow their journey -- even if everyone knows it won't end in a mid-season thud.

Here are some recent reality TV stars who made it to the end without making themselves (or anyone else) break into a sweat.

Kent Boyd, 'So You Think You Can Dance?'
Take one look at Kent, and you know he's a winner. Of 'America's Happiest Engineering Student'. Or perhaps 'World's Cutest Carnival Employee'. So what is he doing on scintillating 'SYTYCD'? Shutting it down, that's what. You just knew as soon as the unlikely 18 year-old Ohioan showed up, judges and audiences would not let him go.

Miles on Work of ArtMiles Mendenhall, 'Work of Art'
The corn-fed bad boy babe must've had producers praying he'd get through at least a few weeks. He did better than that, winning consecutive challenges early. His work has included performance art (he slept in one of his installations) and daring (he dabbed his precious bodily fluids onto a canvas). Without a doubt, Miles has been the odds-on favorite for the win since the gallery opened. Below, he's artful with fellow contestant Nicole.

Crystal Bowersox, 'American Idol'
The 23-year old-single mom easily brought more experience and soul to 'Idol' than the teeny-boppers flocking to auditions since the age minimum was lowered. Week after week, teenagers Aaron Kelly and Katie Stevens proved to be no match for veteran belting busker Bowersox. Only another 23-year-old, Lee DeWyze, could keep up and ultimately defeat Crystal.

Nicole Scherzinger, 'Dancing with the Stars'
The ABC hit has been dominated by athletes and entertainers with -- wait for it -- years of dance training. Not exactly zero to hero stuff. And perhaps no champ was more of a foregone conclusion than the Pussycat Doll. Paired with Derek Hough (who had already taken the top prize with Brooke Burke in '08), Scherzinger was no stranger to a perfect score of 30. Rival Erin Andrews had tabloid attention (is she paired off the dance floor with Maksim?!) but never had enough twinkle in her toes to challenge Nicole.

The Voltaggio Brothers, 'Top Chef'
Sibling rivalry is delicious, and when 'Top Chef: Las Vegas' viewers were first introduced to Michael and Bryan, a fight to the bitter end seemed assured. The brothers indeed made the finals, where Michael (pictured) eventually triumphed. They've now banded together to post their own cooking vids on YouTube.

Meghan and Cheyne, Amazing Race Meghan and Cheyne, 'The Amazing Race 15'
Meghan Rickey stayed cool, Cheyne Whitney's cowlick stayed aloft, and the unflappable boyfriend/girlfriend pairing from SoCal cruised to victory. They plan to share the $1 million dollar prize as husband and wife; their engagement made headlines in March. Below is Meghan and Cheyne's appearance on 'Late Night' , where Cheyne pulled a fast one on his mate and the audience.

Russell Hantz, 'Survivor'
A two-time finalist, Texas oilman Hantz doesn't need the million and never got the million, but you knew this guy was heading to the finish every time he flashed his cackling eyes (yes, his eyes cackled!). No man is an island, but Russell was one with the island: his uncanny ability to locate hidden immunity idols made him an early bet to be among the last standing. Will he be invited for a third go-around? Seems like another no-brainer.

America's Got Talent now has the 10-year-old opera singer they added from YouTube. She's the new Susan Boyle, and if she doesn't win, she'll be in the Top 3.
