Jon Stewart vs. Glenn Beck; Fighting Over the 'Ground Zero' Mosque (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 17th 2010 2:00AM
Jon Stewart vs. Glenn Beck; Fighting Over the 'Ground Zero' Mosque'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart has been making fun of Fox News anchor Glenn Beck for a long time. On the latest episode of the show (weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central), Stewart criticized Beck for his stance on the "Ground Zero" mosque.

In case you haven't been following this controversy -- it was proposed that a Islamic mosque and cultural center be built in Lower Manhattan. The site chosen was just two blocks away from the location of the 9/11 attacks.

Polls consistently show that a majority of Americans -- 64% or more -- oppose building the Islamic center. President Obama is in favor of the mosque. ... And naturally, Glenn Beck is against it. But tonight, Jon Stewart went after Beck, accusing him of "flip-flopping" and hypocrisy.

First, Beck attacked Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf -- the man who is trying to build the mosque. And then Beck presented this quote from Rauf:

"I wouldn't say that the United States deserved what happened [on 9/11], but United States policies were an accessory to the crime that happened."

Glenn Beck acted righteously appalled by this statement. But then, Stewart cut to a clip of Beck from three months earlier. And in that clip, Mr. Beck also argued that U.S. policies helped lead to 9/11. ... Whoops. This means that Mr. Beck and Mr. Rauf pretty much said the same thing.

So what do you guys think? Is Glenn Beck flip-flopping?

And whose side are you on with this whole "Ground Zero" mosque issue? ... Are you in favor of it, or against it? Do you support Team Obama and Stewart? Or are you on Team Glenn Beck?

GLENN BECK IS THE ULTIMATE HYPOCRIT, AS WELL AS BEING THE ULTIMATE OPPORTUNIST. HIGHLY PAID FOR SPREADING HIS UNTRUE, DISTORTED, BIASED, ONE-SIDED FACTS. FOR THE RIGHT PRICE, HE'LL SAY ANYTHNING. HE CALLS HIMSELF, A "REFORMED" ALCHOHOLIC AND DRUG ADDICT, AND THEN HE CALLS HIMSELF A "PATRIOT", LOL...DON'T LISTEN TO A SINGLE THING THIS CHARACTER HAS TO SAY. I'M SURE HE HAS BEEN CALLED "CRAZY".

Americans must be tolerant and bow down to the rest of the world, while the rest of the world laughs at us. No one will ask who is funding this mosque, yet Palosi wants to ask who is funding the opposition?? We have lost our minds! This would have never been thought about 8 years ago. This is not "building a bridge" this is making a statement to the world and to America that terrorism won. The terrorist declared themselves as Muslim. You dont see "Christian" suicide bombers or "Mormon" suicide bombers. There has been more Christians die for their faith in the past 20 year then in history and yet we are the ones persecuting the Muslims?
There was a jewish synagogue that had been there for over 100 years and destroyed on 9/11 that was not allowed to be rebuilt but yet these people could rebuild on THE SITE of 9/11, where part of one of the planes destroyed the building. There are over 100 mosques in NYC...have respect for the dead and build your mosque away from that area.

now to out debate you (this was my resolution in november)

FIrst-the mosque is not on ground zero. It is a comfortable two blocks away. There is another mosque about four blocks from ground zero. any difference? oh that's right. no.

Second-your arguments about suicide bombers being muslim is totally stereotypical and has no place in this discussion. You are not being tolerant in any way. this is hate speech, so shut up.

Third-i quote "there has been more Christians die for their faith in the past 20 year then in history and yet we are the ones persecuting the muslims?" what?? that doesn't make any logical sense. at all. what about the crusades? thousands of christians AND MUSLIMS were killed then. Are you also forgetting the seventy-something muslims that were killed in 9/11?

I used to watch him for giggles until he started bringing his Religious Psychosis and Chalkboard into the ignorants home. (oops did I say that). Can you imagine Walter Cronkite doing that?? He would have been fired on the spot. Comedy (Daily Show) is essential and always has been. We don't need another Jimmy Swaggart doing the nightly news. It's gotten to be too much for me and I have a great sense of humor. No tolerance for hogwash.

Jon Stewarts Daily Show, much like local radio personalities Walton and Johnson, is completely satirical. He takes real news and puts a comedic spin on it. I have no opinion on Glen Beck, I haven't watched any of his show. I think people get too carried away with pinning labels on everything. Instead of building any kind of Mosque or Church, how about building a memorum ? Something similar to the Wall of Veterans. .to remember the lives that were lost from the 9/11 attacks. America was founded to be free from religious persecution.

Lets put this in perspective. (A) Two blocks away in New York City
is like 2 miles away in other areas. (B) Extremists exist in all
religions (and political groups). Should we condemn all for the acts
of a few? (C)The constitution of our nation is one that is based on
tolerance not hate. (D) If NYC zoning would allow another cultural
center to be built here, then there is no reason that the Islamic
Center should not be built. (E) Jon Steward just points out when
people contradict themselves, a task most if no all news shows have
given up.

Freedom of religion yes we all agree and everyone has a right to worship who they want. Understandable, but of all the places in New York to build a mosque, next to ground zero? Anywhere else there wouldnt be an issue. Looks like someone is either looking to start a fight
