'So You Think You Can Dance Canada': Your Top 22 Revealed!

by Sarah Kelsey, posted Aug 23rd 2010 10:05AM

After a mediocre week of marathon So You Think You Can Dance Canada tryouts, tonight we finally get to meet our Top 20. From the snippets us viewers got to see, I have to say... DAMN. I was impressed.

Though we didn't get to see what "gruelling dance lessons" the golden ticket winners were subjected to over their week in Toronto, something happened; they were all miraculously transformed into confident, capable movers and groovers. A few even busted some moves that were outside their initial range.

Which could be why I'm finally excited about this season. Good dancers!? 'Bout time.

The surprise move of the night was that judges couldn't pick just 20 dancers from the pool of people who made it to the Toronto tryouts, so they upped the number of finalists to 22. (I guess, since they're the judges, they can just do that, right?)

Canada, here are your Top 22 competitors for this season of 'SYTYCDC': Amanda, Bree, Charlene, Claudia, Danielle, Denys, Edgar, Hani, Janick, Jeff, Jera, Jesse, Jonathan, Julia, Kirsten, Kloe, Mackenzie, Nathalie, Sebastian, Shelaina, Shavar and Yonni. Best of luck trying to keep all of those names straight.

The one complaint I have about this uber-short episode is the only dancing I really got to see was in the form of blink-or-you'll-miss-them snippets. I understand we're trying to get on with the show so the real performing can begin, but I would have liked to see how the tryout week in Toronto went; and I would have liked to see all of our finalists' solo performances.

Regardless, you can catch the first "real" performances from this talented group of hopefuls tonight at 9PM on CTV.

Random thoughts:

- Why were all of the dancers forced to walk into a room of their peers apres seeing the judges!? Would you want to do that (especially if you were nixed from the show!)? No. No, you wouldn't. Fail.
- I have to give it to the judges. It's never easy for someone to hear the words "You didn't make it." And though I don't agree with all of the judge's decisions (I'm going to miss Kevin!), they did their best to cushion the blow for some of the young talent who were cut.
- On a personal note, our Top 22 have some cool names, though they haven't always been easy to spell. Thank you CTV for finally clearing up my spelling confusion (they're called supers; use them) and thanks, dear readers, for your understanding.
