Trying to Save Five Adorable Puppies From Death on 'Last Chance Highway' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 23rd 2010 1:44AM
Trying to Save Five Adorable Puppies From Death on 'Last Chance Highway''Last Chance Highway' (Sat., 8PM ET on Animal Planet) is a show that follows animal rescuer Shelly Bookwalter and her team, as they attempt to save dogs from an overcrowded animal shelter system. Shelly and her fellow rescuers race against the clock, each and every day. ... But they manage to save more than 150 dogs per week, and they find homes for more than six thousand pets per year.

On the latest episode, Shelly encounters five adorable puppies who are suffering from mange; a skin disease that is caused by mites. This disease is a result of neglect by their previous owner. "Poor babies," Shelly says. " ... They're itchy and they can't help it."
Due to their disease, the five puppies only have a week left to live -- unless they get out of the pound. If they remain in the shelter, then they will stay isolated, until a vet arrives to put them to sleep.

Pretty quickly, Shelly starts crying -- as almost anyone would. "It's not fair," she says, "that they have to die, because they had [an] owner not take care of them. ... And I'm just -- I'm sad for them."

Will Shelly be able to save the pups? She has six days left to do so.

By the way, if you would like to adopt any of the dogs that you see on the show, here is the link that will let you do that. It would be a great thing to do.

Listen I never reply on these sites, but this issue I hold dear to my heart. We had a yorkie from a pet store and he gave us nothing but uncondtional love. He never left my side knowing that I am ill. he became very ill himself, but stayed alive as long as he could for me. It took us 5 yrs to even bring ourselves to look for another one, but this time we rescued one and I cannot believe how anyone could just give this little guy up same lame story daughter went to college so now he has no use. People like that make me sick. We believe our beloved Max in some way brought us to our new boy Toby.
It is sad because we know he was abused he crys in his sleep sometimes so I tell him that he is safe now. I cannot begin to imagine the suffering he has endured. But now he is the prince and we just keep giving him love. Hey he Gets Sunday Sauce!!
Anyway I just wanted to say my heart goes out to those dogs and I wish they would say where I could send funds to.
What made me open up and decide to make a comment is to someone like Gary.
I hate to be mean but may he come back as one of those poor dogs that every second the clock ticks it brings you closer to the end. BY the way we don't believe in kill shelters here.
Anyway the real problem with this world is we pay some stupid idiot or trashy tramp 20 million or more to read lines. I mean really think about it and that was for just one picture. They don't save lives or do anything special. How many lives dogs, cat, and humans do you think we could save. I think then you wouldn't have to think about percentages that he is so fond of.

Please microchip your pets. 1 in 3 get lost in it's life time. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats are found. Because owners are not found most will be put down.

Check with local spca, shelters, even animal control...they offer or can refer you to a low cost pet microchipping event, place, or person.

Also, please have them fixed. 4 million dogs and cats are put down each year.

Puppies are cute, but they grow fast and require alot of attention. The first 2 years they are still puppies even though they don't look like one any more. They are costly, think about all the costs.

go to akc.org and check all breeds for health, behavior, grooming, training, and best home enviroments. Doing your homework will keep pets in homes and out of shelter and landfills.

You don't throw a child in the trash when you don't want them any more, so don't do it to pets.

At the very least put collars with current tags on your pets. And step up! When you see a dog take the time to help. You may not be able to keep it, but you can help get it to someone who can help!!!

It's so sad that these gentle animals are euthanized yet we let criminals sit in jail on the taxpayer's dollar. I think we need to reverse this. Euthanize the criminals and keep the animals alive on the taxpayers. At least the animals are adoptable.

This is so sad. I am a dog owner an have five dogs of my own. My heart goes out to these pups, if i could take them i would. But having five and no help from anyone since i'm single it is very dificult not to mention the amount of money it takes to keep them healthy. Please people spay and neuter your pets. No living creasure should have to die from somthing that could be cured. I agree with users who think killing shelters should be Abolished!

"SPAY and NEUTER your animals and we can prevent 98% of this sadness.."...........Sorry, but you are mistaken. Spaying and neutering has no influence on the companion animal population. There has been a steady 2.75% annual growth rate over the last 30 years from 100 million cats and dogs to 140 million cats and dogs (and rising ever yet). If even 10% of the population reproduces, you replenish the population. Spay neuter programs barely cover the opposite - about 10 percent are not fertile. Fortunately 90% die or we'd be hip-deep in dogs and cats. If we didn't kill them, there aren't enough homes or shelters in the country to handle a consistent 45 million puppies born every year. You want to foster, but do you want to foster 50 at a time? You'd have to - and about a 100,000 other Americans - and you'd get another 50 in a month - and the month after that and the month after that...meaning, you'd need 100,000 more animal shelters to cover the problem. Got bucks? 45 million dog X $50 for basic care and spaying or neutering...quite a chunk of change in an economy where money actually matters. You want kids to not go to school because you want to raise 45 million puppies? In only 6 years, every American man, woman and child would have to take one of your pups. If 10% of the population doesn't make it to your shelter and reproduces, guess what? No change. Even after you bankrupt the country, no change. I hate to break it to you, but you really have no idea of the reality and enormity of the problem and the lack of any viable solution.

Don't blame breeders for the shelter mess. Put the blame where it belongs on irresponsible owners. Keep your dog in the house where it belongs, take it outside on a leash supervised by an adult and like a miracle no more shelter problems. Spay/neuter if you want and train your puppies. Animals are not disposible

I am not supporting puppy mills in any way, shape, or form but there are many more puppies and kittens born due to irresponsible owners not having their dogs and cats neutered and spayed in a timely manner or at all than there are in mills. More efforts need to be made to have puppies and kittens spayed and neutered BEFORE they have a chance to reproduce.

Yet we pay for the hoards of sick, twisted pedophiles and the like to live comfortably on our tax dollar....

There should be a FEDERAL MANDATORY LAW for spaying and neutering, with the exception of SOME breeders who are also rescues.
