'Army Wives' Ends Season 4 on a High Note, But Was It the Last?
On Sunday night, 'Army Wives' fourth season came to a finish and the ratings were superb. The finale of Lifetime's top drama was the most watched episode of the season, drawing 3.9 million viewers, with a 3.0 in household ratings. It's not surprising that the show did so well in the ratings, since 'Army Wives' is coming off one of its best seasons. But there is one nagging question for fans since Lifetime has yet to announce a fifth season pick-up: was this a series finale?
The question is a legitimate one since for the first time in the show's history, there was no major cliffhanger ending. No explosion at the Hump Bar, no lingering health concerns, no soldiers missing in action for any member of the tribe. In fact, if you look at the couples individually, things look pretty good for the 'Army Wives' families.
Claudia Joy and MichaelAt his daughter's graduation, Michael (Brian McNamara) made a surprise return after a harrowing time as a captive on the Afghan/Pakistani border. Claudia Joy (Kim Delaney) had premonitions of Michael not making it back to Charleston, but the story was wrapped up in a neat little package. Even their daughter Emmalin's (Katelyn Pippy) concerns about getting into college on an ice hockey scholarship were allayed when she rehabilitated her knee after surgery.
Joan and Roland
Here's a case where there could have been a cliffhanger involving Joan's (Wendy Davis) ongoing health issues. After sustaining serious injuries in combat, Joan was fully recovered by the season finale. Roland (Sterling K. Brown) even accepted the fact that Joan might be returning to active duty. There weren't any problems with toddler Sara Elizabeth, so all was well in the Burton household.
Roxy and TrevorYes, Trevor (Drew Fuller) is on active duty in Afghanistan, but the Le Blancs are mostly doing fine. Finn has been diagnosed as near-genius and is in the right school, and while the Hump Bar is not as thriving as when Fort Marshall is packed with soldiers, Roxy (Sally Pressman) has been clever about drumming up business. The only fly in the ointment is that new baby Roxy and Trevor hoped for won't be coming for a while.
Frank and Denise
Denise's (Catherine Bell) late-in-life pregnancy might have been a signal for a dramatic nail-biter of an ending for 'Army Wives,' but she gave birth without a hiccup. Frank (Terry Serpico) even attended via video feed, and the tribe was standing by with ice chips and labor coaching. As if the birth of the Sherwoods' baby wasn't a happy enough finish, Jeremy (Richard Bryant) got engaged to the Army nurse he met in Afghanistan.
Pamela and ChaseOK, here's our one and only true "what will happen next" storyline. Pamela (Brigid Brannagh) has not one, but two, major decisions facing her as the show continues. After divorcing Chase (Jeremy Davidson) because he was more dedicated to Delta Force than to his family, Pamela moved on with her life by joining the Charleston police department.
After a homicide case showcased Pamela's abilities as a detective, she received an offer to join the Atlanta P.D. Before she could make that decision, however, Chase presented his letter of resignation for Delta Force and asked Pamela to take him back and resume their marriage. Wow! What will she do now?
Considering the quality of the drama and the powerhouse ratings, it would make sense for Lifetime to bring 'Army Wives' back for at least one more season. True, there is a case to be made for going out on a high, but -- for me -- I'd like to see the tribe return.
