Get ready for 'The Hurt Locker,' the reality show.G4, the network best known for covering videogames and Comic-Con and launching the career of Olivia Munn, is developing a new reality show called 'Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan,' which will follow a U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit as the squad trains in the country and then deploys to Afghanistan for several months.
Like the Oscar-winning movie, the 10 one-hour episodes will show the incredibly dangerous job the EOD squad is tasked with in locating and dismantling bombs, in rough terrain and incredibly dramatic situations. The show will premiere in the spring, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"There is simply no way to comprehend the incredible amount of pressure and split-second decision making these individuals must undertake in the worst possible physical conditions without riding along with them as our cameras will do," G4 president Neal Tiles told THR. "This is a rare opportunity to showcase the work of the courageous men and women on the front lines and share with our viewers all the real-life drama, teamwork, danger and triumph that goes along with this specialized job."
Tiles, who says the Oscar-winning 'The Hurt Locker' was his favorite movie from last year, says the show was conceived as the perfect melding of the G4 audience's interest in technology and blowing things up.
"We've always said the young-male demo has extremely varied interests," Tiles said. "Both G4 and the Navy like this for the same reason: It appeals to the tech side of G4's demographic."
Though the Navy has given the network permission to film the series, G4 and the production company will maintain creative control of 'Bomb Patrol.'
Meanwhile, though 'Bomb Patrol' will easily be the most serious show on G4, which, like E!, the Style network and the Golf Channel, is owned by Comcast, Tiles also tells The Hollywood Reporter that G4 isn't looking to become the next Discovery Channel, with a string of shows in the "deadliest jobs" genre.
And if you're not a regular G4 viewer, some of the other programming that may catch your eye while you're waiting for 'Bomb Patrol' to premiere:
- 'It's Effin' Science' (Tuesdays, 9PM ET): If you dig 'MythBusters,' you'll probably like this series, which puts a cool spin on science-y stuff, i.e., lots of crap gets blown up. Or, as a series producer puts it, "'Effin' Science' is basically a show about people with a lot of scientific knowledge and very little common sense."
- 'Campus PD' (season 2 premieres Sept. 1 at 8PM): Think 'Cops,' but with drunken college students as the perps. Yes, it sounds silly, but it's addictive.
- 'Attack of the Show!' (Mon.-Fri., 7PM): The nightly series covers everything the well-informed pop culture fanboy and fangirl would want to know about, from movies and comics to gadgets and viral videos.
