Barbara Walters Plans Unisex 'The View'

by Jean Bentley, posted Aug 25th 2010 1:30PM
Barbara WaltersCBS might be planning a new mom-centric talk show designed to compete with 'The View,' but ABC is developing its own panel show spinoff for the daytime market -- this time, it's an half male, half female version.

The New York Daily News reports that 'View' creators Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie have decided to recreate the format of their successful show, which has been on the air since 1997, using a new set of celebrity panelists. Fancast.com names former 'Today' host Bryant Gumbel, comedian Alec Mapa, former BET news anchor Jacque Reid and former Fox News reporter E. D. Hill as the potential co-hosts.

According to the NYDN's source, the new series, which is still in the development stage, wouldn't necessarily be advertised as "male" but rather "unisex." It would air in the soon-to-be Oprah-less afternoons and be shot in L.A. rather than New York.

The "Male 'View'" concept has been done before: Dick Clark's 'The Other Half' ran for two years with Mario Lopez, Danny Bonaduce, Dr. Jan Adams and Dorian Gregory joining Clark on the all-male panel.

With Walters masterminding ABC's new project, however, the show sounds like it will definitely stand a fighting chance in the crowded daytime market. The only question: Is there actually an audience that will watch?

Guess I might be repeating myself but now that BIG MOUTH JOY has her own show and only has guests she knows will agree with her opinions or what she has to say The View should dump her and relpace her with someone who has the courtesy to give other guests on the show time to get their two words in.

Joy B (BIG MOUTH)has her own show now and only has guests on her show that she knows will agree with anything she has to say and replace her with someone who keeps their big mouth shut when other guests or panelists have something to say. Barbara tries to control her on The View but that's impossible when you are dealing with a big mouth.

I'd love to see the male version of "The View." Gumbel and Mapa would be solid choices; I don't know the other two.

"The Today Show" has never been the same since the great Gumbel and (Jane) Pauley left. Mapa was fantastic on "Half and Half," as was the whole cast. This show never got the commercial or critical praise it deserved.

I liked the idea of the female "View" as well, but I don't watch it anymore, since there's been too much turnaround. I must say, though, that from the few times I've seen Whoopi, she seems to have brought some stability to the show, in the wake of the Rosie fiasco.

I have to agree with #23 - I don't like Bryant Gumbel - never have - never did - never will

I don't care for the View either - those women are just too much!!

A "Man" view headed up by that metrosexual Cryin Bryan Gumbel? Give me a bleeping break!

It will be nothing more than a leftist Metrosexual bitch fest.

They should put Whoopie on it in order to have somebody with some balls on the show.
