Emmy Picks: Best Lead Actor in a Comedy

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 25th 2010 12:05PM

With the Emmy awards just days away, I'm continuing to pick who I think should and who I think will win the major awards.

Yesterday, I discussed the Best Lead Actress in a Comedy category. Today we look at some funny guys in the Best Lead Actor in a Comedy category.

Nominees:
Alec Baldwin, '30 Rock'
Steve Carell, 'The Office'
Larry David, 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'
Matthew Morrison, 'Glee'
Jim Parsons, 'The Big Bang Theory'
Tony Shalhoub, 'Monk'

Who will win:
There are three two previous winners in this category (four, if you count David's Comedy Series win for 'Seinfeld,') so there are lots of places the Academy can go if they want to play it safe. I can see them giving it to Alec Baldwin again, even though '30 Rock' didn't have the strongest season, though Shalhoub might get the votes as a tribute to the end of 'Monk''s long run. But the Academy loves the fact that they can give a comedy award to a guy who is still thought of in some circles as a dramatic actor. So Baldwin will take it.

Who should win: Jim Parsons should have won last year for playing Sheldon Cooper on 'Big Bang.' In addition, the episode he submitted this year, where Sheldon accidentally gets drunk to combat stage fright and ends up dropping his pants while accepting an award, showed how Parsons can transcend the uptight social misfit characterization he's given to Sheldon. And while, like '30 Rock' and 'The Office,' 'Big Bang' had a bit of an off year, Parsons was still at the top of his game.

Dark Horse: Matthew Morrison, and not just because of 'Glee' mania. Though I've never been the biggest fan of his mostly bland, earnest performances as Will Scheuster, there have been moments where the potential of what his character can be comes into the spotlight. And his performances -- both of the musical and acting varieties -- in the episode he submitted, 'Mash-Up' are worthy of the prize.

For once, though, I'd wish the Academy would give Larry David the award for playing an enhanced version of himself, like they used to do with Jack Benny way back when.

Who do you think will take home the Emmy?

Morrison even being nominated is a travesty of Emmy justice. Joel McHale was flat-out ROBBED. Hopefully, they atone for this BS next season. Morrison only impressed me when he learned the truth about Terri; but since he mostly just plays every scene as a melodramatic emo douche nozzle, he can GTFO.

Also, Shaloub????? Vomit. I just don't get it.

I wish they would just give it to Carell already, but I think Parsons could upset this season. I loathe TBBT, but let him have his due props.

Not a fan of the Glee guy either, most of the series he's just angry and frustrated.
Parsons to win.

Morrison is also my Dark Horse. The industry likes the fact that a Broadway guy has made it big on tv.
