'Lake Placid 3' Becomes Syfy's Most Watched Show

'Lake Placid 3' now ranks as the most watched show on SyFy in the last five years. With names like 'Sharktopus' and 'Dinocroc vs. Supergator,' Syfy's Saturday night original movies might sound silly. But despite their outlandish titles and B-movie premises, they're doing big business for the network.

Broadcasting & Cable reports that last Saturday's feature, 'Lake Placid 3,' scored a huge ratings win. Drawing in 3.12 million live, same-day viewers, the film has now been crowned as the most-watched Syfy show since 2005; usurping an October 2009 episode of 'Ghost Hunters' with 3.06 million viewers.

In other words, the made-for-TV horror flick starring Colin Ferguson of 'Eureka' fame beat popular offerings such as 'Battlestar Galactica', 'Warehouse 13' and Ferguson's own 'Eureka,' which all have averaged between 2 million to 3 million same day viewers per week.

'Lake Placid 3' also had the distinction of becoming the most-viewed original movie on the network, and placed fourth in the rankings of most-watched Saturday movies. Placing third was 'Lake Placid 2,' the 2007 movie starring John Schneider that was a sequel to the original 1999 theatrical release.

The news of the movie's success bodes well for both Ferguson and Saturday night programming on Syfy. With future releases like 'Sharktopus,' produced by Roger Corman, and 'Mega Python vs. Gatoroid,' featuring '80s pop stars Deborah Gibson and Tiffany, the reign of 'Lake Placid 3' may be a short one. For Ferguson, who's becoming one of the movers and shakers at the network, the big ratings may help his chances when 'Fossils,' his first made-for-TV directed film, premieres on the Saturday schedule later this fall.
