TLC Orders Show About Latino Family With Sextuplets
Kate Gosselin (and her eight) and the Duggars (and their 19) are getting a new big brood neighbor at TLC next month. The cable network, home to 'Kate Plus 8' and '19 Kids and Counting,' will debut 'Sextuplets Take New York' on Sept. 14. The eight-episode reality series will follow Queens, N.Y. residents Victor and Digna Carpio as they raise their six 22-month-old babies (four boys and two girls).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, TLC is billing the Carpios' clan as "America's first Latino sextuplets." The Carpios also have a nine-year-old son, and go through more than 50 diaper changes a day (memo to Pampers: investigate sponsorship opportunity).
The Carpios also maneuver in a "modest" home and are raising their family on a very tight budget. In a 2009 profile, the New York Daily News reported the family's income as $1,800 a month, which might help explain why the Carpios would sign on for a reality series even after witnessing the impact such a show can have on a family (see: the Gosselins, for example) .
The family was cast in the new show, according to TLC exec Nancy Daniels, after the network filmed a special on three sets of parents who were dealing with the challenges of a multiple birth.
"We fell in love with them," Daniels tells THR. "All of our shows look at interesting families and interesting lives. They're struggling with taking care of a lot of small children who are all the same age and overrunning their house."
'Sextuplets Take New York' is being produced by Figure 8 Films, the same company that produces 'Kate Plus 8,' and will join a family-centric TLC lineup that also includes 'Little People, Big World' and 'One Big Happy Family.'
TLC also has another pair of family-themed series on tap for the months ahead, including:
- 'Quints by Surprise' (premiering Aug. 30 at 10PM ET), which follows Casey and Ethan Jones, who already had one toddler when they found out they were pregnant with quintuplets. The series will follow the family's attempts to start a business after Ethan finishes his MBA, and in one early episode, Casey will be left alone with all six kids when Ethan has to make a business trip to Asia.
- 'Sister Wives' (premiering Sept. 26 at 10PM), which is sure to be one of the network's most controversial series. The show, which is being touted as a reality TV version of 'Big Love,' will revolve around a Utah family led by ad salesman Kody Brown, who lives with his four "sister wives" -- Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn -- and 13 kids in an apartment building.Brown told Radar Online earlier this month that he decided to do the show as an attempt to shed light and foster understanding about his family's situation. "I felt like the secretiveness of the society has been a little bit dangerous for the society, as well as the public," Brown said. "This is part of our reason for essentially coming out. This is a story that needs to be told. I think that by simply telling this story and not getting into prejudices it actually helps the society to understand."
