Soap Casting News: Buddy's Out on 'OLTL' ... and More

by Allison Waldman, posted Aug 30th 2010 11:00AM
brandon_buddy_one_life_to_liveThere was some sad casting news this week, including a former big star downgrading to recurring status, and another younger star choosing to leave 'One Life to Live.'

For all the news, read what's been happening around the dial in our weekly soap casting wrap-up.

Bye Bye, Buddy
Brandon Buddy has decided to leave 'One Life to Live,' and the character of Cole Thornhart will be exiting with him (meaning, no recasting plans). This isn't the first time Buddy has announced his intention to leave 'OLTL." Two months ago, the actor used Twitter to say that he was moving on. As SoapCentral reported, Buddy tweeted on June 18, "It's a bittersweet day. Today I decided I'm not going to re-sign [my contract]. No more Llanview ..."

Soon after that announcement, Buddy declared that someone had hacked into his account and that message was erroneous. Conspiracy theorists suggested that ABC Daytime wasn't happy with Brandon's premature pronouncement and asked him to recant. Since he wouldn't be leaving 'til the fall, June was just too soon to spill the beans. Whatever the case, it's now official that Brandon Buddy will be gone this fall.

leslie_charleson_general_hospital_monicaA Little Less Leslie on 'General Hospital'
Once upon a time, the romantic entanglements of Monica, Alan (Stuart Damon) and Rick (Chris Robinson) dominated the action in Port Charles. Well, Rick and Alan are long gone and now 'General Hospital's' Monica, played by Leslie Charleson, has been dropped to a recurring character.

She's a four-time Daytime Emmy nominee and one of the last of the Quartermaines still on the show, but she's still being given less to do. Charleson's been on 'GH' for 33 years, having joined in 1977 when the soap was in the bottom of the ratings. Her storylines helped 'GH' rise in the pre-Luke (Anthony Geary) and Laura (Genie Francis) era.

Izzy B Coming Back to 'Days'

Death is never really an end on soaps, so the news that Staci Greason will be returning to 'Days of Our Lives' as Isabella Black isn't much of a shock. On Oct. 19 on 'Days,' Isabella will be appearing Brady's (Eric Martsolf) dream.

Apparently, Brady will be in a bad way and in need of a visit from his late mother. Isabella died from pancreatic cancer not long after giving birth to Brady, so he never had a relationship with her.

It turns out that the cancellation of 'As the World Turns' won't be a total downer for soap fans. At least one long-time romance will receive a happy ending when Larry Bryggman returns to 'ATWT' as John Dixon and reconnects with Elizabeth Hubbard. The idea, in fact, came from Hubbard. The nine-time Daytime Emmy nominee -- and two time winner -- ran into her former co-star in New York City and asked if he'd be willing to return to the show for the finale.

In a TV Guide interview, Hubbard explained that 'ATWT' executive producer Chris Goutman went along with her concept of John and Lucinda sailing off into the sunset. "I always felt Lucinda would do whatever the hell she wanted... [so] at the end, John and Lucinda go off to Amsterdam together, which I think the fans will like. It was nice to end all those years of drama with a little fun."

One's Out Another's In
With the end of the night-time Hope (Kristian Alfonso) storyline on 'Days of Our Lives,' actor John Callahan has lost his gig as Dr. Baker. Fortunately, the character could be returning in the future, so it may only be a goodbye for now.

That's how it is for Thorsten Kaye on 'All My Children.' Kaye, who was back briefly as Zach just two weeks ago, will be returning to Pine Valley again this fall. According to a Soap Opera Digest interview with David Kreizman, 'AMC's' co-headwriter, "We'll have Zach back for a much longer period of time in October and November."

'Castle' Time for Eden
Eden Riegel will be appearing on an upcoming episode of ABC's 'Castle.' Riegel currently stars on 'The Young and the Restless' as Heather Stevens, but like Nathan Fillion -- star of 'Castle' -- Eden began on an ABC soap. Eden won a Daytime Emmy as Erica Kane's daughter Bianca on 'All My Children', and Fillion played Joey Buchanan on 'One Life to Live.' Eden's 'Castle' episode will air in October.

james rebhorn_as_the_world_turnsFamiliar Face on the Soaps
James Rebhorn is joining 'ATWT' as Reid's (Eric Sheffer Stevens) uncle. Rebhorn, who's a character actor with a face that everyone will recognize, is best known from movies like 'Independence Day' and 'Scent of a Woman.' But he's also had famous roles on the soaps, as the evil Bradley Raines on 'Guiding Light,' and Angel's twisted, abusive father, Henry, on 'ATWT.'

That's right, he's already been in Oakdale as another character, but the producers don't care. It's been long enough that Rebhorn can be reintroduced as yet another persona. Watch for Rebhorn starting Sept. 8 when Reid is in a major crisis that involves his family.
