Emmys to Split Into Two Ceremonies?

Emmy AwardsAre more Emmy Award changes afoot?

If the TV networks get their way, the Emmys as we know them could completely disappear. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the major TV networks have approached the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a proposal to split the Emmys into two separate ceremonies. At the very least, they'd like to increase the number of networks that take turns broadcasting the show to include cable and pay channels.

This year's telecast saw ratings hold steady from last year, though the ceremony did undergo a few format changes. Producers front-loaded the first half of the ceremony with the comedy and drama acting categories, which seemed to be a favorable change in terms of audience opinion.

Right now, the networks propose relegating the second-half categories -- the TV movie and miniseries awards -- to their own show on cable TV. After all, HBO and its ilk dominate those awards every year anyway. Network execs have reportedly told THR off the record that they're frustrated they are forced to air a show that essentially advertises HBO, so this proposal would allow the cable networks share the cost.

During this year's show, the energy and pacing certainly flagged during the second 90 minutes. Not too many viewers would complain if those second-half prizes were presented on a different show, though the number of people who would actually watch that show is unclear.

Tell us: What do you think of the proposed idea? Would you watch two different Emmy ceremonies?

Translation: Our(broadcast networks) shows can't compete with them(cable based) as we can't set our(broadcast) ad rates high if our(broadcast) shows keep losing to them(cable).

What I'd really like to see is a completely separate awards show for cable series. Cable does not have the same FCC content restrictions as broadcast...

Wouldn't this actually be a three way split? Didn't they already carve off the daytime Emmys as a seperate ceremony?
