Recap: 'So You Think You Can Dance Canada' Down to 18

by Sarah Kelsey, posted Sep 1st 2010 9:32AM

After watching 'So You Think You Can Dance Canada' for almost three weeks, I think I've learned a few things about how the viewers vote. First, they seem to like traditional dance styles (no Lady Gaga music mixed with foxtrot moves! Sorry, innovative choreographers). They also seem to hate jazz -- why, I can't understand.

Which could be why I wasn't really surprised by this week's bottom six dancers: Yonni, Jera and Edgar for the guys, and Claudia, Kirsten and Bree for the gals.

After some suspenseful (sarcasm!) pauses, we moved into the dance-offs where each dancer performed solo for the judges.

Claudia appeared first for the gals in a sexy red number; she sashayed around the stage to a contemporary salsa beat and did pretty darn well. Next up was Kirsten with a contemporary piece; it was good, but it wasn't fight-for-a-spot awesome (I think I've seen those moves from her before). The final dance for the gals belonged to Bree, who performed a cool, jiggity contemporary dance.

For the guys, Yonni was up first. That dude can move his legs fast (like I-almost-couldn't-keep-track fast). Jera followed with a more subdued acrobatic and contemporary number -- he even added some breakdance moves. Last up was Edgar, who threw down some sexy hip-hop.

In the end, based on the judges' votes, it was Bree and Yonni who were sent packing.

Catch the next round of dance performances on Monday, Sept. 6 at 9PM on CTV.

Random Thought:

-- What viewers do like is fun, exotic group performances like the Bollywood sequence that opened tonight's show; it made the audience go crazy. I even thought a few girls were going to pass out because they were screaming so hard. Screw Beatlemania, it was more like Bollymania.
