'American Idol' to Hold Final Auditions in Los Angeles
Great news for all those Angelenos who think they've got what it takes to win 'American Idol'!
The show's producers have announced that they're expanding the search for new talent by adding Los Angeles as the seventh, and final, city to host auditions for the upcoming 10th season.
Producers say the extra auditions are a celebration of the show's "momentous" tenth anniversary and will give tens of thousands of people a chance to show off their singing chops. And this year the eligibility age range has been increased to include hopefuls from 15 to 28 years of age.
Executive producer Ken Warwick said it's also a vote of thanks and acknowledgement to Los Angeles itself: "This summer we have had an exceptional turnout -- both in the number of people auditioning and the level of their talent. ... Los Angeles has always delivered great talent, and so we feel it only fitting that we end our tenth season audition tour here in our home city."
Now, cynics might say that this is just a gimmick to boost ratings and to provide more time to close deals with next season's judges. Adding an extra city will also draw out the auditions process, thus extending the length of time the show stays in the news during production.
As has been extensively reported, 'American Idol' and FOX executives had been keen to unveil the new judges either before, or during, the auditions roadshow. Perhaps now they will be unveiled during the Los Angeles auditions? Stay tuned for updates as they come in.
'American Idol' season 10 is due to premiere on FOX, January 2011.
