Bizarre Iraqi TV Show: Like Punk'd, But With Fake Car Bombs at Military Checkpoints

Al-BaghdadiaTalk about black comedy: There is a television show currently airing in Iraq that pranks celebrities by planting bombs in their cars, then films them via hidden cameras as they are stopped at a security checkpoint and accused of terrorism.

We're not kidding. This show actually exists. They wrote about it in The New York Times.

Although it sounds like something a bumbling, Michael Scott-like executive would greenlight in a showbiz parody film, this is a 100 percent real television show being watched on actual TV screens by actual people.

An Iraqi television station, Al-Baghdadia, lures the celebrities to the checkpoints under the guise of an interview at the studio. Their fake guards then plant a fake bomb, and proceed to interrogate the star when it's "discovered."

Gawker reports that not surprisingly, the show has garnered plenty of criticism from Iraqi newspapers, although it's been officially sanctioned by the security forces in Baghdad.

Could you imagine what 'Punk'd' would've been like if Ashton Kutcher had a sense of humor this messed up? Justin Timberlake's tears at the sight of his belongings being repossessed could have been far, far more embarrassing.

So it's kind of like The Jersey Shore but for Iraqis?
