'Project Runway' Season 8, Episode 6 Recap

by Michael Pascua, posted Sep 3rd 2010 3:28AM
April looks at the Project Runway competition[Project Runway - You Can Totally Wear That Again]

Without the hindrance of 'Models of the Runway' we can have a challenge on 'Project Runway' that has nothing to do with the models.

This week Heidi announced that the contestants would have to transform a bridesmaid's dress into something fashionable and hip, but not anything wedding related. Everyone was still reeling from the drama of last week, with Michael C. still wiping the truck tire marks off his face.

Since the contestants had to use most of the bridesmaid's dress in their new dress, they were given only $50 and a maximum of two yards of fabric. Obviously, the loophole was that they could grab as much trim, feathers, buttons and zippers that they needed. Interestingly, most of the contestants picked the two yards of fabric. Christopher got tossed a wrench almost immediately when his client was changed; ironically, we don't hear much from him the rest of the episode

Our two characters with editing panic this episode were Michael D. and Peach. Michael tried his best to be politically correct by not calling his model fat, and decided to make a dress that emphasized his model's shape. Tim's critique with Michael D. pointed out that the bra looked oversized. Peach coined a "Peach Panic" as she messed up her skirt and slowly ran out of material as the commercial arrived. April tried to save her roommate, but to no avail.

Tim's critiques managed to go by without much of a hitch. His drama with Gretchen was put aside so he could give her more critiques. That's a true professional. The two Michael's went with a sheen fabric to accent their dresses. Valerie's original dress looked like the Cheerios outfit on 'Glee.' Casanova told Tim "exactly" about 20 times; it didn't matter, he was immune. Peach feared the pattern fabric she chose wasn't right, but Tim reassured her.

The contestants got a twist by showing their dresses at a public showcase. The attendees got to vote for their favorite outfit. Peach claimed that she could "sell Ice to Iceland," but I think she meant Greenland. I thought everyone learned that Greenland had ice and Iceland was green; maybe she had a Casanova moment. Michael C. managed to sweet talk his way to a few votes.

The day after the public viewing, several designers scrambled to fix their dresses. Peach still couldn't get her dress to work and no one was nice enough to warn her that her ruffles looked like a woman with stuffed napkins on the side of her skirt. She did listen to her gut and tried to cover as much of her dress with a straight hairstyle.

Joining Michael Kors and Nina Garcia for judging was Cynthia Rowley. As the dresses went down, I had mixed feelings for most. Ivy and Casanova created the same basic idea; I'd prefer Casanova's pants with Ivy's top. I loved Mondo's whole look after he mentioned that his client was from Jersey City; it was fitting for her to have tacky New Jersey hair. I was confused by Valerie's black squares on the side of the dress; they looked almost as if they peeled off the sides. I also couldn't believe that Andy got away with dying his outfit; it looked great, but it felt like the easy way out, turning something blue -- that he himself mentioned complimented his model's skin tone -- into a gray/purple. Christopher's dress was well tailored and looked pretty, but it couldn't have been that hard. I'm confused as to where a whole jacket came from on Michael D's dress. I don't recall his model having a jacket at the showcase.

The high scoring dresses were Mondo (streamlined, modern), Michael C.(great mix of fabrics, great), and Christopher (strong top, bottom a bit too short). Even though Mondo had the most votes at the showcase, Michael C. won again. Michael used a similar dress without the lace to audition for the show. I'm getting bored with his designs.

The low-scoring dresses got bashed hard this week. Peach was assaulted with words like "avocado goiter," "Holly hobby," and "bedskirt ruffle fest." Michael D., who looked like he went to jail for drug possession, made his dress worse and cheaper looking than the original. Nina claimed she could use the dress to prevent dengue. Valerie apparently repositioned her model's breasts in a tacky fashion. Wonky breasts and mosquito netting aside, Peach was sent home. She proclaimed that the "Fairy Dragmother" was no longer with her kids.

It was really Peach's time to go; she never got past doing a few outfits that she thought looked modern, but actually looked old. If she didn't listen to Tim and put a transition between the shirt and the skirt, the dress could have looked better. Some thought had been put into the the back of the dress and was tailored correctly as well.

On previous seasons of 'Project Runway,' or even 'Top Chef,' when the audience got to vote, that vote counted. Whether it was via an auction (Season 1's Envy challenge) or an actual vote (Season 2's Banana Republic challenge), the person/team that got the votes won. There was no reason that Mondo shouldn't have won other than the fact that Heidi and the judges knew that, from the week before, Michael C. had enemies. They gave him the win to save him and create more drama.

WELLLLLL.... popularity or not it seems like michael c's designs are POPULAR with the judges and that's all that matters!

Personally... i think that all but April and Michael (and poor Casanova) are snotty little self absorbed twits! Too bad they can't design as well as they cut others to the quick.

Hmmmmm.... does the phrase "sour grapes" apply here or what?

My advice "children" is shut up or put up!

Setting the personality wars aside & looking objectively: I hated Michael C's dress. The lace looked awful to me, among other things. Mondo's, on the other hand, I loved. Difference of opinion? Yes. Huge.

Now to the personalities - both sides are right: Gretchen is overstuffed of confidence (get over yourself, girl) & Michael C is a glorious crier/whiner(I see him as a "why doesn't anybody like me" kinda guy).

The true winner in terms of personality lost this time. Peach is hilarious & fantastic. The fact that her 21 year old roommate connects to her (a 50 year old mama), just goes to exhibit A. It was her time to go, but her attitude was always 140 percent awesome.

I'm sure the drama will continue for awhile longer since Project Runway is getting boffo
Nielsen Ratings! Last week's episode garnered over 4 million viewers and this week will probably have an even higher number because people are talking about it all over the blogs and everyone wants to see what happens next.

Hated Michael C's dress. This guy is over achieving and does NOT belong with the likes of Gretchen and Ivy. People may not like them but this is NOT a popularity contest and those two along with a few others are the most talented. EXPECT them to be at Bryant Park love them or hate them and NOT Michael C's ass. Can't stand how everyone is pitying his no talented ass!

With the likes of Gretchen and Ivy? Ivy almost got eliminated the first week when she made pants out of pants and has never been in the top 3. She makes very boring garments and this week the pants she made were terribly unflattering on her model. Also, the whole sabotage thing about Michael C. telling everyone not to vote for her was totally made up. If he did say it it would have been showed or he wouldn't have denied it knowing they could show him saying that. Peach even said in an interview that no one else heard Michael say anything like that at all, and that Gretchen and Ivy are not being unfairly portrayed. They are both truly awful, and Gretchen's designs are very average, her two wins were questionable as well, and her outfit this week was hideous

Wah Wah Wah
For starters, if you knew ahead of time that Peach was eliminated, you'd be fine with it. They are weeding out the lesser designers. Casanova will be gone soon.
Also, if you wimply write the non-winners whine about the winner, then you know it is what it is.
Gretchen has talent but also too much ego. Ivy has nothing. Maybe they don't like men designers?
Get over it, scissor sisters. They do need an intervention

Everyone is talking about how Mondo won the popular vote, but one thing I haven't seen being mentioned on any of the blogs is the possibility that Michael C. got the 2nd or 3rd most votes.

I can't wait till Ivy is off the show. The back stabbing is awful. Gretchen and Ivy are immature and have no class. Get them off!!

I think both Ivy and Gretchen should humble themself and stop making an fool of themself. They remind me of bullies in grade school so grow up. the judges know what they are looking for. Good job Michael C.

I think Mondo didn't win this challenge because the judges didn't like the hair and make-up he paired with it. I did like Michael C's, at least I thought it was interesting compared to the rest of the competition. I think this whole focus on Michael C. is annoying, and I'm pretty much in the middle. I don't think he's as good as the judges think he is and I don't think he's the bas as the other designers think he is. But in a competition, it's wasted energy to worry about what someone else is doing... They all need to get over it.

I did not like Michael C's dress. I don't mind Michael as a person and I have even liked some of his previous work. But this dress looked like "sexy funeral" to me. The lace and velvet...eww. Just weird. I loved Mondo's look and even liked Casanova's and Ivy's better than Michael's. Poor Michael D though. I dare any of the other designers to do much better. He was definitely at a disadvantage from the get go.

Why is Michael D. at a disadvantage? Because his model was a larger size? Does that mean she's not allowed to be fashion-forward? There were many options open to him to turn the dress into something flattering and he chose instead to try to hide it behind netting. It was ugly.

I actually am tired of seeing Gretchen bashed..everyone on the show is an adult and has free will..Michael C. is a crying whiner and Gretchen at least takes responsibility for her actions. Tim and Heidi need to intervene with the backstabbing and squabbling..this animosity is much different than previous seasons and is making the show almost unwatchable-but Gretchen and Ivy are not the only ones participating or responsible.

In what way is Gretchen taking responsibility for her actions? She was the group leader last week in all but title and basically laid all of the blame on Michael C for the team's loss.

"Michael C. is a crying whiner"

I haven't seen him whine. Who can he whine to anyway? Everybody is on the Michael C is a talentless boob badwagon. Even Cassanona was just about signing up when the last six were back out on the runway for judging.

I do love how they edit Micahel C's expressions though :)
