An Awkward Family Encounter on 'Rizzoli & Isles' (VIDEO)

'Rizzoli & Isles'Many adopted children go through life wondering if they'll ever meet a blood relative. But we'll bet none of them get a first encounter quite like the one Maura Isles got on 'Rizzoli & Isles' (Mon. 10PM on TNT). While conducting the autopsy of a master identity thief, the DNA results come back with an apparent problem.

Jane Rizzoli, who was there working the case of the thief, tried to convince Isles that mistakes can happen and that it's no big deal to just send another sample. But it's not the fact of potential contamination that had Isles so disturbed. it's what the lab results meant.

"It's not a mistake," she explained, pulling up the sample on the computer alongside her own. "This is the victim's DNA profile. This is my DNA profile ... It's a biological match."

"What are you saying? The guy on the table is somehow related to you?" Rizzoli asked incredulously.

"I'm telling you that the man laying there is my brother." So much for the heartfelt family reunion. We understand dramatic emphasis, but Rizzoli is supposed to be a detective. While the viewers had it figured out for what seemed like ten minutes, Rizzoli looked positively dumbfounded and confused until Isles spelled it out for her.

We do think Rizzoli's case just got a lot more interesting, though. With the series already renewed for a second season, there's plenty of time to unravel the mystery of Isles genetic past, perhaps even tracking down her birth parents and finding out why she was given up for adoption.

It does look like her upbringing in a life of privilege, though imperfect was better than whatever path led her brother to her table with his chest cut open and his multiple identities spilling out all over Rizzoli's case file.
