Could Bo Burnham's rise from YouTube celebrity to pseudo-fame be as lucrative as Justin Bieber's one day? Or is he destined to go the way of Tay Zonday? The 20-year-old comedian, who has become a rising star in the comedy world after his offensive yet delightfully self-deprecating songs garnered major YouTube attention, landed a four-record deal with Comedy Central at age 17, a writing deal with Judd Apatow at 18, and the Panel Prize at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at 20. He's also got a Comedy Central special called 'Words, Words, Words' airing Oct. 16, not to mention that episode of 'Comedy Central Presents' he filmed last year.
Now, he's landed a put pilot deal with MTV for an as-yet-untitled new series about "a kid fresh out of high school who's pursing the new American dream of being a celebrity without having any talent," Burnham told Variety.
That sounds like a resounding "yes" for Burnham's future prospects.
David Janollari, executive vice president of scripted development at MTV, had nothing but praise for his new star. "[Burnham] had a such a great take on who he is and what the post-high school millennial generation experience is all about," he said. "Everything he said and talked about felt so authentic, and that authenticity was the most important thing. This is all about taking his voice and vision and putting it into a half-hour comedy."
Burnham's show is the fourth series added to MTV's scripted slate, in addition to a second season of 'The Hard Times of RJ Berger,' an American version of 'Skins,' a 'Teen Wolf' update and the new 'I Want My Pants Back.'
