Disney's domination of the cable universe continued this Labor Day weekend as the premiere of 'Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam' broke all sorts of records. The website tvbythenumbers reports the made-for-TV musical, starring Disney Channel staples Demi Lovato and The Jonas Brothers, brought in 8 million total viewers on Friday night. While not as high as the 8.9 million the original 'Camp Rock' touted during its 2008 premiere, nor the astronomical 17.2 million of 'High School Musical 2' in 2007, the total made 'Camp Rock 2' the top cable TV movie for 2010.
The sequel also became the most-viewed Labor Day telecast ever among kids 6-11 and tweens 9-14 with a total of 6.3 million viewers. It was also the top Friday scripted telecast in total viewers across both cable and broadcast networks since the series finale of 'Numb3rs' back in March, and the top end-of-week telecast among tweens since last year's premiere of 'The Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.'
Overall, the Disney Channel ranked as the number one television network from 8PM to 10PM on Friday night, handily beating direct competitor Nickelodeon by a whopping 600 percent. Ironically, the closest competition was Disney-owned ABC, which eked out 4.1 million viewers with its lineup or reruns and an original '20/20.'
An interesting tidbit involving how TV viewership would translate to box office receipts if 'Camp Rock 2' had been released in theaters: At an average of $8 per ticket, the movie would have collected more than $63 million in its opening night. Perhaps Disney should consider that figure when the network inevitably decides to give the green light to 'Camp Rock 3.'
