Piers Morgan Officially Taking Over 'Larry King Live'

by Chris Harnick, posted Sep 8th 2010 12:55PM
Piers MorganPiers Morgan has officially been named the host of a new show replacing 'Larry King Live' on CNN. By naming Morgan, the news network put rumors to rest after months of speculation.

"I have watched 'Larry King Live' for much of the last 25 years, and dreamed of one day filling the legendary suspenders of the man I consider to be the greatest TV interviewer of them all," Morgan said in a statement.

No word on whether he'll actually wear the suspenders during his hour. The series will premiere in January 2011 and has yet to given a name. According to CNN, the interview program will air at 9PM ET in the United States and and will air on CNN-International in more than 200 countries.

Morgan's base will be New York, but he'll also work from Los Angeles and London.

American viewers will recognize Morgan from his judging gig on NBC's 'America's Got Talent' and the winner of a season of 'Celebrity Apprentice.' Morgan also currently judges 'Britain's Got Talent.'

A former print journalist, Morgan made a name for himself in the newspaper world, serving as editor of Rupert Murdoch's News of the World and editor-in-chief of the Daily Mirror. He was fired from the Mirror for publishing fake photos of British soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners. He later hosted a current affairs show on Britain's Channel 4.

It's strange that they chose a critical Brit with a cool demeanor to replace the easygoing Larry on an American talk show. I won't be tuning in.
