Jon Stewart: Iran Is "Primitive," Iranian Officials Have Sentenced a Woman to Death by Stoning (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart is a fairly tolerant, liberal-minded individual. But on the new 'Daily Show' (weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central), he attacks the nation of Iran, calling the country "primitive." Why? Well, as it turns out, he may have a really good reason. The Iranian government has attempted to put a woman to death for committing adultery. And what's worse -- the woman may be executed by the most horrible method possible: Death by stoning. This is a dreadful method of punishment that has been condemned by most other countries.
Obviously, Stewart is not pleased by any of this. The woman -- whose name is Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani -- was convicted of her "crime" during a highly sketchy trial. She has already received 99 lashes from a whip, even though her supposed "affair" took place after her husband was dead. In addition, Ashtiani was nearly killed by hanging, before getting a reprieve at the very last second.
Her sentence is currently suspended pending a review, but Ashtiani still may be executed via stoning, which is considered a form of torture. The U.S. government has called the practice "barbaric." Stewart is upset by it too. He wonders if Iran is ready to become a modern nation, or if the country wishes to stay trapped in the past. "It comes down to this, Iran," he says. "You have a choice to make. ... [Are] you gonna go 'A.D.' or are you sticking with 'B.C.'?" he asks. It's a good question. Hopefully, the Iranian legal system will finally put a stop to its inhumane treatment of women.
