Replacing Steve Carell on 'The Office': New Details on Season 7

by Chris Harnick, posted Sep 10th 2010 10:30AM
Steve CarellThe hunt for Steve Carell's replacement on 'The Office' is one of the buzziest pieces of Hollywood gossip. But, aside from the constant barrage of rumors, don't expect real news anytime soon.

According to the Live Feed, viewers are in for a long wait, because the final decision likely will happen after season 7 wraps. Here's how this season will go down:

The first half will feature a celebration of Michael Scott, but also showcase potential replacements from within the cast. One episode will see Andy (Ed Helms) star in a community production of 'Sweeney Todd,' another will focus on Jim (John Krasiniski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) having their baby baptized and another will show Darryl (Craig Robinson) going over Michael's head with a corporate matter.

The second half of the season will be about Michael Scott leaving, and who will take his place as the Scranton branch manager. The report indicates somebody may have the position at season's end, but by season 8 there could be an epic failure on the new boss' part.

Look for NBC to launch online features in an effort to increase fan speculation about who should replace Michael as the boss.

Previously announced guest stars Amy Ryan, Kathy Bates, Melora Hardin and Timothy Olyphant will pop up, along with other celebrities, to further drive speculation.

While actors such as Ricky Gervais and Harvey Keitel have been rumored for the part, sources told the Live Feed that producers are toying with the possibility of shifting the show's point of view to a current character being the star and the new boss being secondary.

Production on season 7 is six episodes in, and a source told the Live Feed that there's a feeling of new momentum on the set.

"There's a cool energy around set that we haven't seen since season 2," an insider said, "like anything is possible."
