Lady Gaga, in Meat Dress, Wins a Record Eight Times at MTV VMAs (VIDEO)
It was a very Lady Gaga kind of night at the '2010 MTV Video Music Awards' (Sun., 6PM ET on MTV). The singer, who wore a meat dress, walked away with an unprecedented eight awards -- including what was essentially the grand prize; the "Video of the Year" award for her song 'Bad Romance.'
Gaga changed outfits three times during the show, but received the most attention for her final ensemble: a dress (and purse) made entirely out of meat. Hopefully, the "meat" was fake, not real ... but you never know with Ms. Gaga.
Iconic 64-year-old performer Cher handed out the final award to Gaga in her meat dress. Cher quipped that she was the oldest person at the show with "the biggest hair and the littlest costume."
As a matter of fact, Cher was wearing a fairly racy dress herself -- inspired by her outfit from the song 'If I Could Turn Back Time,' which once got her banned from MTV. But you have to do a lot more to get banned these days, and Gaga's outfit left Cher's in the dust.
Gaga beat out such acts as Eminem and 30 Seconds to Mars to win "Video of the Year." During her acceptance speech, she handed her purse over to the award presenter, then said this: "I never thought I'd be asking Cher to hold my 'meat purse.'" Yeah. To be honest, we never saw that one coming either.
The singer cried while accepting her final trophy of the evening. As a "thank you" to her fans, she revealed the title of her new album -- which will be called 'Born This Way.' She then sang a portion of her new title track, which concluded with the lines "I'm on the right track/ Baby, I was born this way." Based on her multiple victories tonight, Ms. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta does certainly seem to be on the "right track" these days.
Lady Gaga had previously worn a version of her "meat dress" for Vogue Hommes Japan. The outfit confused many commentators and critics, who wondered if the dress had any "meaning," or if it was just intended to shock. It seems like the second option is the more plausible one.
So what do you guys think? Should Lady Gaga have won so many prizes tonight? Did you find Lady Gaga's "meat dress" to be controversial? And Is it even possible for the singer to be "controversial" anymore, or she just trying too hard these days?
