'One Tree Hill' is Back, and So Is the Theme Song

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 14th 2010 6:20PM
'One Tree Hill'Is it wrong to be just as excited to hear the 'One Tree Hill' theme song as we are to find out the fates of possibly dead characters when the show's eighth season premieres tonight?

Tonight's season 8 premiere should be a crazy episode, especially considering all the drama that went down in the season 7 finale. The biggest OMG moment, hands down, was when Clay and Quinn were shot by Clay's crazytown stalker, Katie. (Uh, good thing the show got renewed, because that would've been the ultimate series finale cliffhanger.) We also found out that Haley was pregnant with her second child, and Julian finally proposed to Brooke.

Aside from cliffhanger resolutions, tonight's premiere marks the return of the 'One Tree Hill' theme song, which producers dumped after the time jump in season 5. But instead of Gavin DeGraw singing his tune, "I Don't Want to Be," the show decided to go the 'Weeds'/"Little Boxes" route and have different artists record their own versions of the song.

Tonight's episode will feature the original version, and next week's will showcase the cover by Kate Voegele, who plays Mia on the show. Other artists to record versions include Aimee Mann, Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, Tegan and Sara, Matthew Ryan and Laura Izibor, according to music supervisor Lindsay Wolfington. DeGraw's version will return for good in the spring.

Watch the video for "I Don't Want to Be" below. (Keep an eye out for a cameo by 'Life Unexpected''s Shiri Appleby!)

Are you excited for 'One Tree Hill' to return? What about the theme song?

So glad someone's OTH's back. Even though seasons 1-4 were the best(est), I still watch. Woohoo.

I'll admit, One Tree Hill has been a guilty pleasure since the beginning. The show hit its stride during the sibling rivalry between Dan and Keith (and it's landmark episode "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept"), lost its way in the middle and picked it back up again.

I'm happy it's back on the air for another season, but I'm not happy that the main cliffhanger from the last season finale was a resolved the way it was in tonight's premiere. Oh well, you win some and you lose some.
