'America's Got Talent' Winner Is Crowned

by Kelly Woo, posted Sep 15th 2010 11:57PM
Michael Grimm, America's Got Talent winnerThe 'America's Got Talent' winner for season 5 was named Wednesday night, after a summer filled with magicians, aerialists, dance troupes and opera singers. So who won 'America's Got Talent'?

In a shocking finale outcome, singer Michael Grimm triumphed over early favorite, 10-year-old opera singer Jackie Evancho, to win the $1 million prize and a Las Vegas show.

"Is this really happening?" asked the 30-year-old singer in disbelief, then screamed, "Yes!"

Meanwhile, a disappointed but gracious Evancho raved about her 'America's Got Talent' experience. "I have loved every single moment," she said. "I just really hope I'll be able to sing for you guys again."

Black light illusionists Fighting Gravity took third place and the flamboyant opera dandy Prince Poppycock was in fourth.

Most prognosticators picked Evancho or Poppycock. After the top 4 performance night, TV Squad's own Isabelle Carreau wrote Grimm wasn't "fresh or unique enough to win." And readers voted Evancho as most likely to take the crown. Even Grimm himself seemed prepared to lose after performing, telling TV Squad that "I gave it all I could" and that at least "now, I have a fan base."

The audience gasped when the first eliminee turned out to be Poppycock (real name: John Andrew Quale), who has been the talk of the season. Still, his final competition performance may not have been his best -- at least according to judge Piers Morgan, who infamously gave him a strike Tuesday night.

After getting eliminated, Poppycock, as mysterious and strange as ever, told Morgan, "I just want to say thank you to Piers. You see, I was promised a horse but I only got two guys in horse heads, so Piers intuitively understood I needed a horse's behind."

To that, Morgan replied, "I do think I made a mistake [buzzing you]. I do ... I should've buzzed you about 10 seconds earlier. [The audience boos] I'm kidding!"

The judge continued, "You've been an incredible contestant this year and although I thought you had a bit of a bad day at the office ... when I watched you with Donna Summer on this stage, that is what you are. That is when you are at your best: when you're being camp and funny and flamboyant and outrageous and a cross between Elton John, Freddy Mercury, Liberace. That is our Prince Poppycock ... You are a star. You will be a star."

The finale featured a number of star-studded performances, including duets by Poppycock and Summer, Grimm and Jewel, Fighting Gravity and Lionel Richie and Evancho and Sarah Brightman.

i think all of the top ten were great and deserved to be there. i loved michael grimm and voted for him every time. and it appears alot of other people did to. i do think they should have 2 winners one in the singing area and one in the other genre of talent.

OK.....this article said that Jackie Evancho was an early favorite! HELLO!!! was anyone watching this show! SHE WASNT THERE FOR THE FIRST 3 SETS OF AUDITIONS. Dont get me wrong she would ahve made it through either way. But come on people, I don't feel the YouTube episode was fair to all the other contestants. And honestly, I had my mind made up already about Fighting Gravity. Everyone knows they were the TRUE early favorites. I just feel like if Jackie was there from the beginning, she would have had an even bigger fan base, because we would have all had the time to truly fall in love with her....instead she comes in when we all already had our favorites. And for anyone who was rooting for Fighting Gravity, Prince Poppycock, and Michael Grimm.....never gave her a fair chance bc she came in so late....

My opinion anyway. Thats what me and all my friends were saying....FIGHTING GRAVITY!!!! they were so awesome though...i wish they woulda won..so original!

The opinion poll - 47% for Michael and 52% for all others isn't fair - pitting MG against all others is not fair. All the rest, together, only got more than MG by a few points.

I just left a message, but it didn't show up so I will say an abbreviated version, and hope it shows up. Michael Grimm is another Errol Flynn, with that seductive mustache of his. Besides bringing happiness every day as I watch his AGT videos, he is a humble and sweet and giving guy. I just know he is going to be loved and adored by women of all ages for years and years to come. Thank you, Michael Grimm, you are delightful.

MICHAEL WAS NOT THAT GREAT. THAT LITTLE GIRL SHOULD HAVE WON WITHOUT A DOULT. I TRIED TO GET THROUGH TO VOTE FOR HER. AND IT WOULD NOT GO THROUGH. SO I WONDER IF THEY DID THIS ON PURPOSE. BECAUSE I COULD NOT GET THROUGH TO VOTE FOR HER. AND IT WASNT BECAUSE THE LINE WAS BUSY. I GOT NOTHING WHEN I TRIED TO VOTE FOR HER.

I'm so glad he won. He was up against some fine talent, and rightfully came out on top.
I hope he will be heard from, because he's already better than more than half of the scholck we're subjected to as music/talent today.
May he maintain his integrity and personal style, now that he's in the 'machine'...
While the executives try to figure out "what sells", people like him, do what they do out of Love, and the success just goes along with it...(that, and a little luck)...Congratualtions Dude...

I think that the right contestant won the show! Michael Grimm is a great singer. Fighting gravity and Prince Poppycock will probably gain a show in vegas on their own anyway. And you know Jackie Evancho will be scooped up by some producer, if not all ready, to make a CD or something. Pierc Morgan probably will be in the mix with whatever Jackie does in the future I am sure!
