'Mike and Mike' Argue Against Referees Using Their Judgment (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Sep 15th 2010 3:15PM
Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic argue that referees should stick to strict interpretation of rules rather than rely on judgment to make their calls on 'Mike and Mike in the Morning' (weekdays, 6AM ET on ESPN2). To support their point, the radio hosts play a parody of a referee making several questionable calls.

"For every one of those plays you don't like, there are nine-hundred-ninety-nine examples of plays you don't want the official using his judgment," said Greenberg.

Then, Greenberg plays mock tape of a referee ruling against a foul because he feels sympathetic toward the offending player, and the same referee deciding not to call a penalty because he thinks the rule is "stupid."

"Okay? You're allowing the official to use his judgment. Is that better? I don't think so," Greenberg said.
