by AOL TV Staff, posted Sep 19th 2010 9:00AM
Mary Tyler MooreIt's been 40 years since plucky career girl Mary Richards last tossed her hat in the air on that Minneapolis sidewalk after 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show's' seven-year run (1970-'77).

To celebrate 'MTM's' 40th anniversary, take a look at where the cast has been since the lights went off in the newsroom. Did they really make it after all?

Whatever Happened to Mary, Lou and the Gang?

It's been 31 years since plucky career girl Mary Richards last tossed her hat in the air on that Minneapolis sidewalk after <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-mary-tyler-moore-show/62539/main"target="_blank">'The Mary Tyler Moore Show'</a>'s seven-year run (1970-'77); even <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/oprah-winfrey/76901/main' target='_blank'>Oprah</a> has recently paid her respects -- and if Oprah likes it, we <i>must</i> pay attention. We take a look at where the cast has been since the lights went off in the newsroom. Did they really make it after all? -- By Angel Cohn

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/ed-asner/2608' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Ed Asner</font></a>

<b>Lou Grant</b>

<b>Then:</b> The brash and bossy Lou Grant ruled the WJM newsroom with an iron fist filled with a stiff drink, not that it helped keep his show out of the bottom of the ratings barrel, but deep down he was a big softie who loved his co-workers as much as his own family.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/ed-asner/2608' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Ed Asner</font></a>

<b>Lou Grant</b>

<b>Now:</b> After a dramatic spinoff featuring his gruff 'MTM' character, Asner has been a prolific actor, and has become one of the go-to guys when it comes to playing Santa Claus (<a href="http://movies.aol.com/movie/elf/14259/main" target="_blank">'Elf,'</a> <a href="http://movies.aol.com/movie/national-lampoons-christmas-vacation-2-cousin-eddies-island-adventure/1245369/main" target="_blank"> 'Christmas Vacation 2,'</a> <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-ellen-show/761919/main" target="_Blank">'The Ellen Show'</a>). He's also recently completed memorable guest roles on <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/er/49782/main' target='_blank'>'ER'</a> and <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/studio-60-on-the-sunset-strip/942768/main'target='_blank'>'Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.'</a>

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/gavin-macleod/44272/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Gavin MacLeod</font></a>

<b>Murray Slaughter</b>

<b>Then:</b> The put-upon straight man, Murray Slaughter was one of the lucky staffers who had a loyal wife and loving family at home. His male-pattern-baldness hair fringe and excessive on-screen sweating kept him from being a star anchorman -- and also explained how he was able to tolerate (just barely) Ted Baxter butchering his scripts for the six o'clock news.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/gavin-macleod/44272/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Gavin MacLeod</font></a>

<b>Murray Slaughter</b>

<b>Now:</b> Post-'MTM,' MacLeod set sail as the captain of <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-love-boat/62733/main' target='_blank'>'The Love Boat,'</a> and since then he's kept an even keel and steadily floated along in his career, guest starring on everything from <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/jag/50774/main' target='_blank'>'JAG'</a> to <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/oz/761755/main' target='_blank'>'Oz'</a> to <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/that-70s-show/54343/main' target='_blank'>'That '70's Show.'</a> The actor now has his feet firmly planted on the ground as the honorary mayor of the west coast city Pacific Palisades.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/ted-knight/38822/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Ted Knight</font></a>

<b>Ted Baxter</b>

<b>Then:</b> Ted Baxter was self-assured, confident, handsome ... and couldn't read a cue card to save his life. Still, while cocky, he exuded a certain puppy-dog charm that attracted his adorable future wife Georgette, who was equally lacking in smarts. A match made in heaven. <b>Now:</b>Knight was the loving-but-bumbling patriarch on the family sitcom <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/too-close-for-comfort/233718/main' target='_blank'>'Too Close For Comfort'</a> before he passed away from colon cancer in 1986.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/valerie-harper/30533/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Valerie Harper</font></a>

<b>Rhoda Morgenstern</b>

<b>Then:</b> The best best friend in the world. Rhoda was a straight-shooting, loud-mouthed New Yorker who loved and hated Mary with a passion. She envied her best pal (and downstairs neighbor) for her keen style, her ability to attract guys and her perfect figure, but she was loyal and loving and funky in her own free-spirited way.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/valerie-harper/30533/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Valerie Harper</font></a>

<b>Rhoda Morgenstern</b>

<b>Now:</b> Harper starred in her own spinoff, <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/rhoda/761687/main' target='_blank'>'Rhoda,'</a> which lasted four years (1974-'78) and had one of TV's most memorable weddings, before moving on to front another sitcom, <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/valerie/428086/main' target='_blank'>'Valerie.'</a> Since that show ended, she's appeared in guest spots on shows like <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/sex-and-the-city/53301/main' target='_blank'>'Sex and the City,'</a> <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/melrose-place/99997/main' target='_blank'>'Melrose Place'</a> and <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/til-death/875166/main' target='_blank'>''Til Death'</a> and on Broadway in 'The Tale of the Allergists Wife' and 'Golda's Balcony.' She's also on the board of directors for SAG.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/cloris-leachman/41211' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Cloris Leachman</font></a>

<b>Phyllis Lindstrom</b>

<b>Then:</b> Leachman brought her genius comic timing to her portrayal of Phyllis Lindstrom, Mary and Rhoda's lonely-housewife landlady, who constantly gushed about her perfect husband, the never seen Lars, and amazing daughter, Bess, all the while giving backhanded compliments to swinging single Mary and battling with her nemesis Rhoda.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/cloris-leachman/41211' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Cloris Leachman</font></a>

<b>Phyllis Lindstrom</b>

<b>Now:</b> Leachman also earned a spinoff, <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/phyllis/233838/main' target='_blank'>'Phyllis,'</a> though it didn't last as long as <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/lou-grant/1350896/main" target="_blank">Asner's</a> or <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/rhoda/761687/main" target="_blank">Harper's</a>. She memorably starred on <a href=' http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-facts-of-life/188629/main' target='_blank'>'The Facts of Life'</a> and stole the show (and two Emmys) as the grouchy grandma on <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/malcolm-in-the-middle/129858/main' target='_blank'>'Malcolm in the Middle.'</a> She was nominated for another Emmy for her work in the HBO drama <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/mrs-harris/61956/main' target='_blank'>'Mrs. Harris'</a> and is known for appearing in several of <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/mel-brooks/83158' target='_blank'>Mel Brooks'</a> films.

<a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/georgia-engel/21872/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Georgia Engel</font></a>

<b>Georgette</b>

<b>Then:</b> Soft-spoken but good-hearted Georgette was the one person who could see past Ted's buffoonery and was able to love him. The dim duo married, adopted one child and had another, though one has to marvel that they figured all that out. Georgette also became a close confidant to Mary and even gave birth in Mary's apartment.

<a href='http://movies.aol.com/celebrity/georgia-engel/21872/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Georgia Engel</font></a>

<b>Georgette</b>

<b>Now:</b> Engel's memorable whispery voice has been put to good use for such animated films as <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/dr-dolittle-2/9769/main' target='_blank'>'Dr. Doolittle 2'</a> and <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/open-season-2006/20052/main' target='_blank'>'Open Season,'</a> she's also been in front of the camera as Robert's mother-in-law on <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/everybody-loves-raymond/51312/main' target='_blank'>'Everybody Loves Raymond'</a> and has lately been starring on stage in the musical 'The Drowsy Chaperone.'

<b>Sue Ann Nivens</b>

<b>Then:</b> The ultimate Happy Homemaker, White brought Sue Ann Nivens to life with a vengeance. This man-hungry woman was always trying to take a bite out of Lou Grant, but when the cameras were on she was the perfect predecessor to <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/martha-stewart/333797/main' target='_blank'>Martha Stewart</a>, handling household chores with aplomb.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/betty-white/75846' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Betty White</font></a>

<b>Sue Ann Nivens</b>

<b>Now:</b> She went on to become better known as Rose on the cultishly popular <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-golden-girls/241132/main' target='_blank'>'Golden Girls'</a> and has never had so much as a dull moment in her acting career. She's currently voicing characters for the preschool series <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/higglytown-heroes/202409/main' target='_blank'>'Higglytown Heroes,'</a> and just had stints on the soap <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-bold-and-the-beautiful/62757/main' target='_blank'>'The Bold and the Beautiful'</a> and the dramedy <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/boston-legal/219089/main' target='_blank'>'Boston Legal.'</a>

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/nancy-walker/115800/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Nancy Walker</font></a>

<b>Ida Morgenstern</b>

<b>Then:</b> Those who thought that Rhoda Morgenstern was tough never met her gravelly voiced mother, Ida. The no-nonsense lady lovingly pestered her daughter in hopes that she'd eventually get married. <b>Now:</b> Walker was a regular guest star on '80s sitcoms until her death from lung cancer in 1992.

<b>Gordon Howard</b>

<b>Then:</b> While Ted Baxter made the nightly news interesting for the folks of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Gordy Howard actually made it informative. As the station's weather forecaster, he was utterly capable and actually good at his job. He and Ted maintained a friendship, until a New York station got wind of Gordy's talents and wooed him on to bigger and better things.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/john-amos/1409' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>John Amos</font></a>

<b>Gordon Howard</b>

<b>Now:</b> While only a recurring character on 'MTM,' Amos is best known for starring in <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/good-times/62856/main' target='_blank'>'Good Times'</a> and was nominated for an Emmy for his role in <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/roots/241206/main' target='_blank'>'Roots.'</a> He also often appeared on the acclaimed <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-west-wing/55977/main' target='_blank'>'West Wing'</a> and starred as a local pilot on the recently cancelled Alaska-based series <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/men-in-trees/762057/main' target='_blank'>'Men in Trees.'</a>

<b>Edie Grant</b>

<b>Then:</b> Lou Grant was not an easy man to get along with. Perhaps that's why his wife Edie filed for divorce, leading to some of Lou's most touching personal moments. <b>Now:</b> Morrill went on to star on <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/coach/62258/main' target='_blank'>'Coach'</a> and <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/newhart/228289/main' target='_blank'>'Newhart'</a> before she passed away from a kidney infection in 1994.

<b>Then:</b> Before Rist became notorious for his role as Cousin Oliver on <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-brady-bunch/62253/main' target='_blank'>'The Brady Bunch,'</a> he was the precocious adopted son of Ted and Georgette. Needless to say the couple hadn't a clue what to do with their pint-sized genius.

<b>David Baxter</b>

<b>Now:</b> Rist has made a career with guest-star gigs, voiceover work and as a music producer. He's performed as the lead singer/guitarist for many L.A.-based rock bands and produced a horror movie, 'Stump the Band.'

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/david-ogden-stiers/68305' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>David Ogden Stiers</font></a>

<b>Mel Price</b>

<b>Then:</b> Stiers played a put-upon network exec tasked with getting WJM in line, but that was a tall order. He also appeared on' Rhoda,' but as a doctor instead of a network honcho, before going on to his landmark role in <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/mash/62734/main' target='_blank'>'M*A*S*H.'</a>

<b>Then:</b> After years as a TV writer (<a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/my-three-sons/62549/main" target="_blank">'My Three Sons,'</a> <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/that-girl/761722/main" target="_blank">'That Girl'</a> and more) Brooks broke out with 'MTM,' which he created, wrote and produced. <b>Now:</b> Brooks' directorial debut, <a href="http://movies.aol.com/movie/terms-of-endearment/2862/main" target="_blank">'Terms of Endearment,'</a> scored him three Oscars. He's got more Oscar noms, but the feat he's probably best known for is his role as creator of the <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-simpsons/62653/main" target="_blank">'The Simpsons.'</a> (And he's credited with writing 'Spider-Pig'!)

<b>Mary Richards</b>

<b>Then:</b> After the hit <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-dick-van-dyke-show/62263/main' target='_blank'>'Dick Van Dyke Show,'</a> Moore ditched the dutiful-wife role to play a spunky, stylish and single 30-something. Mary Richards may have had rotten luck with guys -- and even worse luck with dinner parties -- but she had great friends, and as the heart of the WJM news room, she kept the place ticking.

<a href='http://www.aoltv.com/celebrity/mary-tyler-moore/50344/main' target='_blank'><FONT COLOR='#2864B4'>Mary Tyler Moore</font></a>

<b>Mary Richards</b>

<b>Now:</b> Post-show, Moore racked up an Oscar nom (for <a href='http://movies.aol.com/movie/ordinary-people/11214/main' target='_blank'>'Ordinary People'</a>) as well as another three Emmy noms and one win in various TV movies (to go with her astounding five wins and five noms for <a href="http://www.aoltv.com/show/the-dick-van-dyke-show/62263/main" target="_blank">'Van Dyke'</a> and 'MTM'). Now in her 70s, the peppy actress has appeared on <a href='http://www.aoltv.com/show/that-70s-show/54343/main' target='_blank'>'That '70's Show'</a> and in a string of made-for-TV films. Moore is also an animal-rights activist and a longtime supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a disease she suffers from.
