David Letterman Was In On the Joaquin Phoenix Hoax

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 20th 2010 11:00AM
Joaquin PhoenixAfter Casey Affleck confirmed to The New York Times last week that his Joaquin Phoenix "documentary" was a hoax, now it's been revealed that David Letterman was in on the whole thing.

'Late Show With David Letterman' writer Bill Scheft admitted on Friday that Phoenix's disastrous February 2009 appearance on the show was all planned, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Dave knew about it and Dave loved it because he could play along," Scheft said. "It was great television."

"I saw the segment notes," he said. "It's an act. I saw Ben Affleck's brother taping the whole thing from offstage."

In fact, Scheft said he was responsible for one of Letterman's quips that night. "I will take credit for the line, 'I think I owe Farrah Fawcett an apology.' That line was mine. I gave that to him during the break."

Letterman will host Phoenix again this Wed., Sept. 22.

Are you surprised Letterman knew about the hoax?

A HOAX for the sake of trying to entice future viewers???????? Never! The Hoax was about as lame as the show itself....what's next Dave, are you going to start leaking Porn with your interns or with Paul S, and the band?

I was taken in until the end of the bit, when Joaquin stood up, shook hands with Dave, and took his glasses off and he appeared a lot more animated, but in a friendly way, like they were congratulating each other on the bit. Kind of like normal.

I thought Letterman committed suicide. He should do everyone a favor and drink Jim Jones' Kool-Aid.

I don't care about Letterman - he is OK. I think Phoenix and Affleck are idiotic losers with a crappy sense of humor. What is this junk? It's not art and it's not acting. It's stupidity at its highest. I'll never watch Phoenix in anything again and Affleck is the leach loser brother of Ben. Drugs are real funny to Joaquin - were you laughing when they killed your brother, River? Joaquin - shame on you.

Yeah, some hoax. It wasn't funny or clever, nobody believed it was legit, and even less people cared.

I do not care for Letterman. I remember how he made fun of Bristol Palin and Sarah Palin. In my opinion, even if you do not care for people, especially when "celebs" like Letterman, think that they are beneath his self created pedistal, it is very hurtful the way that he makes fun of them. Anything for ratings(???)
