Actor Jon Hamm: The Tea Party Is "Racist" (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Sep 20th 2010 3:14AM
Actor Jon Hamm -- the Tea Party Is The latest episode of 'Real Time With Bill Maher' (Fri., 10PM ET on HBO) dealt with the important topic of the Tea Party. And host Bill Maher started off with this question: "Anybody think this Tea Party is racist?" Guest Jon Hamm agreed that he thinks the party is a racist movement.

Jon, Bill, and the rest of the guests discussed the most recent provocation from Newt Gingrich. Apparently, Gingrich said that President Barack Obama was a person who was "outside our comprehension." Newt also said this:

"This is a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happened to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president."

Okay then. Gingrich's remarks were based on an article by Dinesh D'Souza, which referred to Obama's father, who was a member of the Luo ethnic group in Kenya. The column featured the following remark: "Incredibly, the U.S. is being ruled according to the dreams of a Luo tribesman of the 1950s." That is, D'Souza claimed that Obama was running the country according to his dead father's wishes, and further claimed that his dead father's wishes were anti-American.

Maher wanted to know what this was all about. Actor Jon Hamm said that the "Luo tribesman" statement was racist. "That's what it's all sort of couched in ... that's the secret agenda." He then added this: "When they say [Obama] is a 'Luo tribesman,' it's all sort of code."

Fellow guest Martha Raddatz agreed with Hamm. "That's the message there ... that Obama's 'exotic,'" she said. "[That] there's something 'different' about him than the rest of us."

Hamm finished up the "racism" discussion with a jab at conservatives. He said that the Tea Party keeps taking about "taking back" America. "Well," he said, "who are 'we' taking it back from?" Hamm then concluded with this remark: "I'm pretty sure ... 'we' as Americans still have America. I don't know who 'we' need to take it back from." The crowd applauded when he was done.

What do you guys think? Is the Tea Party racist? Were Gingrich's comments racist? Is it fair to accuse Obama based on what his father may, or may not, have thought?

I always wanted to know who the Team Party wanted to take america back from also. who has america and why do they have it? you can never get a complete and honest answer from them. i also want to know what their real agenda is and what would they do to create jobs in this country. i always thought that if a company is not hiring, they are just not hiring. the president can't make these companies hire you, he can only offer incentives to the companies to hire.

I don't know where Jon Hamm gets off calling the Tea Party "racist". I was at a Tea Party rally not long ago, and there were blacks, Hispanics, you name it! I think Hamm ought to attend one of the rallies before he goes off spouting ignorant comments like this.

Okay, this whole racist thing is run its course with absolutely no proof whatsoever. It is Hollywoods attempt to slander an authentic grassroots movement who is sick of government and want REAL change. Trying to derail the Tea Party train by using the race card make you look like a complete jackass.

Tell me what a former porno star has to say about anything, considering what he did and that it is all white. What a joke these people are.

That whole "Let's take America back" comment was first uttered by Hillary Clinton. Love the short memories these guys have. And, they should keep their mouths shut because how many people will now stop watching Hamm's show? I will!

LOL@this thread - did it pop up on some "Tea Party" blog or something?

Calm down, as an outside (of the USA) observer I can honestly say that before I looked on Wikipedia I thought you were all talking about something that the Mad Hatter put on for his friends in Wonderland.

What a silly name for an organisation that wants to take itself seriously (& yes, I know about Boston)

I thought that given the question his response was considered & his own opinion, which isn't it the point that everyone should be entitled?

What's this rubbish that because someone chooses a career they can't have one? I thought the only career that that was determined for was a criminal.

>>> He certainly is enititled, but only to his opinion. The FACTS speak otherwise. Blacks support
Obongo nearly 100%....so, who among them is left go to a tea party? Tea parties WELCOME lack people. That there are so few there is evidence of their reverse-racism. Let's get honest and call the kettle what it is....

I wish these actors and actresses would just shut up and do their job. I don't want to listen to their views, I just want them to entertain me.

Sunshadow, Sunshadow, Sunshadow no one in America has to agree with you or Mr. Hamm. The big difference between you and Mr. Hamm is that you have no name recognition and we would not have spent money watching you. I love it when I see or hear an "Artist" putting his or her foot in their mouth and costing themselves millions. Remember the DIXIE CHICKS? People like you are a cancer on our political landscape, because you are narrow-minded and intolerant of people who do not think the way you do and feel that only your views should be heard and all others should remain silent. The last I heard by and large Americans send their Congressmen to Washington D.C. to be, if nothing else just a little partisan and stand up for their political beliefs. I have visited many libraries in my life and I have never seen a book on great political moderates or how to make friends and curry political favor by agreeing with your political foe.
