Soap Casting News: Two Added, Two Dropped on 'All My Children'

by Allison Waldman, posted Sep 20th 2010 10:40AM
jordi_vilasuso_guiding_light_cbsThere's a lot of activity on 'All My Children' this week as the revolving door of actors spins two in and two out. Meanwhile, there's a primetime star heading to 'The Young and the Restless,' and a disturbing story about the fate of recently-ended 'As the World Turns.'

For all the news, read what's been happening around the dial in our weekly soap casting wrap-up.

'All My Children' Plus Two

Good news for Lindsay Hartley, who just landed on 'All My Children.' After been dropped from 'Days of Our Lives,' Hartley has joined the ABC soap as Cara Finn, a new character who will be appearing on Dec. 8.

Joining her in Pine Valley is another soap veteran. Jordi Vilasuso has been cast as Griffin Castillo, and like Hartley, it's a contract role. Vilasuso is best known from his days on 'Guiding Light' as Tony Santos. Vilasuso's first airdate is Nov. 15. Both of the new characters will be involved with Jake (Ricky Paull Goldin) and Amanda (Chrishell Stause).

Coinciding with the announcement of two new characters, 'AMC' has decided to release two others. Say goodbye to Marissa (Brittany Allen) and Scott (Adam Mayfield). The two actors have been let go because the show has decided to go in another direction. The characters will be recast some time in the near future.

The storylines in which these characters are front and center will continue well into October. That means Brittany and Adam will be on air for a while to come.

New Face, Old Face

That Irish lass on 'General Hospital' who's been hanging around with Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) is actress Erin Chambers. If she looks familiar, you remember her from 'Days of Our Lives,' where she played Lacey, or from primetime shows like 'Medium,' 'Cold Case' and 'Ghost Whisperer."

Welcome back, Jason! That familiar face playing Markko on 'One Life to Live' is actor Jason Tam. Watch for Markko to turn up back in Langston's (Brittany Underwood) life in late September, early October.

Michael Badalucco will appear on 'The Young and the Restless' as an enforcer. Not a cop, mind you, but a bone-breaking bookie who's looking to collect from recalcitrant bettors. Look for Badalucco's Hogan to get tough with Jeffrey (Ted Shackelford) and Kevin (Greg Rikaart).

Badalucco is best known from his Emmy-winning role as Jimmy Berluti on the legal drama 'The Practice.' He's going to be recurring on 'Y&R," and will make his first appearance on Oct. 13.

Could 'As the World Turns' Have Been Saved?

Last week was a bittersweet one for soap fans as the 54-year-old 'As the World Turns' stopped spinning. The decision to stop production, we now know, was CBS's.

In an article from Cincinnati.com, Jeannie Tharrington, a spokesperson for Proctor and Gamble, which created the show, explained that there were a few more years left for the citizens of Oakdale. Tharrington told the website: "P&G wanted to keep 'As the World Turns' on the air for another year or two, but CBS canceled it. P&G tried to move the show to another network, cable, syndication or online without success."

Declining ratings clearly has effected all the soaps simply because there are so many more choices on the dial. In 1956 when 'ATWT' began, there was no cable, no Internet, no syndicated programming. As the television world has expanded, the pieces of the pie for programming has been fragmented. Soaps cannot garner the numbers they once did, but there's still a tremendous following for the stories and characters. It's too bad that CBS couldn't keep 'ATWT' going for another couple of years.

P&G wanted to keep ATWT going? Really? Like they wanted to keep GL/AW/EON going? Seems if that really was the case, wouldn't one of these survived somehow if it is what the genre's greatest packager wanted?

Didn't think so......
