'Chase' Series Premiere: This Show Lives Up to Its Title (VIDEO)

'Chase' Series Premiere: This Show Lives Up to Its Title'Chase' (Mon., 10PM ET on NBC) is a new crime drama from producer Jerry Bruckheimer -- the man behind the 'CSI' franchise and 'The Amazing Race,' among other shows. But so far, the reaction to 'Chase' has not been very positive. 'USA Today,' for example, calls the show "really bad." Other critics are slightly more kind, calling the drama "bland" and "entertaining enough."

After watching the pilot episode, we're willing to argue that the series isn't terrible -- but it's fairly by the book and unimaginative. In a sense, the name of the show says it all.

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

'Chase' involves a team of U.S. Marshals based in Texas. On the show, the good guys -- wait for it -- "chase" the bad guys. Yes, 'Chase' is about people chasing other people. Go figure. To give another example of the lack of imagination on display, Annie Frost (Kelli Giddish) is the main character. And Marshal Frost's nickname is "Boots." Why? Because of her fondness ... for wearing boots. Clever! There you go.

During the pilot episode, Annie hunts a fugitive named Mason Boyle (Travis Fimmel) -- a man who attacks families, robs them, and kills in cold blood. Marshal Frost pieces together the clues, tracks down Boyle -- and corners him at the U.S./Mexico border. At this point, Mason leaps off a bridge and into a river in order to escape. So Annie leaps as well (all part of the "chase," you see.)

After an action-packed fight in the water, Annie subdues Boyle -- with the help of her partners Jimmy (Cole Hauser) and Luke (Jesse Metcalfe). They capture the bad guy, and the case is done. But hark to this dialogue at the end, once Boyle is caught ...

Nice job, "Boots."

Annie (laughing): We got him, huh?

Yeah. We got him good.

All of which illustrates the central problem with the pilot. The good guys pursue the bad guy. Then, they catch him. Next, they stand around uttering some lines of expository dialogue pointing out that -- yup, they caught the bad guy. Right. We know they did that all ready. We just saw that happen. Everything proceeds in a straight line with no real surprises.

Again, 'Chase' isn't awful. It has some nice action sequences and some engaging cast members. Still, the show will have to mix things up more in the weeks to come. But what did you guys think of the series premiere? Did you think it was good? Bad? Or were you just indifferent?

Thought Chase was boring, cast didn't appear to be particularly compelling (especially the female lead and the newbie marshall). Won't miss it when it gets cancelled.

I loved this show; it was witty, with great writing and acting, I thought the storyline was excellent and it was very face paced. I can't understand why critics didn't like it; oh wait everyone is watching reality shows like Dancing with the Stars, American Idol or the tv show Glee!
