Meghan McCain Nearly Overdosed on Drugs, Wants to Be Honest About Her FlawsThe 2008 presidential election was a bumpy road for a lot of people. Liberals were freaked out by the possibility of a Sarah Palin vice-presidency. Conservatives were freaked out by the prospect of an Obama presidency. (And they're still pretty upset about this concept, if recent events are any indication.) But one person nearly died from a drug overdose as a result of 2008 election-year-stress. And that person was ... Meghan McCain.

On 'Chelsea Lately' (weeknights, 11PM ET on E!), John McCain's daughter showed up to discuss her involvement in the campaign. She revealed that a friend had given her the prescription drug Xanax, and that the instructions on the drugs said "FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY."

"And the day before the election, I thought, 'Well, this is a friggin' emergency,' and I took it," Meghan said. Then she nearly OD'ed and died.*

Meghan confessed all of this to host Chelsea Handler. "I feel like I'm shocking you," she said to Chelsea. "Which is like -- pretty hard to do." But Chelsea replied that she found McCain to be "refreshing." The host added this: "Just be proud of who you are, and don't lie to people about it -- and then you can't ever get crap about it."

Meghan agreed that there was nothing worse than a liar. "I just feel like if you tell people who you really are, people seem to respond -- and I'm not fake, and I've made a lot of mistakes." Good to know!

(*Additional note: McCain has said in the past that Sarah Palin's presence on her dad's ticket caused "stress" and made her cry. But we're assuming that it wasn't anxiety about Gov. Palin that led to her taking a bunch of Xanax. No doubt she was just worried about her dad losing the election.)

Come on! What did she do, take the whole bottle of pills? Unless she was mixing the Xanax with alcohol or some other drugs, the chances of an overdose are minimal. How do you almost OD? You either do or you don't. Nothing against Meghan, I like the lady, but this is kind of dramatic.
