'Dancing With the Stars' Season 11, Episode 2 Recap

David and Kym wait for their results.['Dancing With the Stars' - 'Week 1 Elimination']

When did 'Dancing with the Stars' become "The Carlos Santana Hour"? While Santana was amazing, even Tom Bergeron noted that he had to fill an hour with eliminations. Tom tried his hardest to emphasize a shocking elimination, and he exclaimed that even he and the producers were shocked when they heard the news.

Frankly, the only shocking elimination would have been if Jennifer Grey or Brandy was sent home, and since that didn't happen we weren't shocked.

A message for Brandy: You're good, stop being nervous. She looked so tense that she could probably crush Maks's head with her hands. If we were the producers, we'd have made her suffer and be part of the "not low scores" bottom two. Then there'd be guaranteed tears next week.

The Carlos Santana Performances - While Louis & Karina provided a sexy, sensual rumba for 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and Mark & Chelsie and Derek & Lacey danced to 'Photograph,' the opening performance to 'Oye Como Va' was the night's showstopper. The biggest issue was that the producers had no clue how to deal with this huge light fixture that was installed on the B-Stage. The cameras were blinded non-stop by the lights as the producers selected several shots of a back-lit Chris Daughtry.

Daughtry - 'September' - Daughtry rocked out the performance without a hitch. It showed amazing growth from his 'American Idol' days. The big question was that since the show focuses on ballroom dancers, why did the production team (or Daughtry) insist on using contemporary dancers? There are several pros like Dmitri, Anna D., or Maks's brother Valentin, who could have danced. Instead, we were treated to a 'So You Think You Can Dance'-esque routine.

We were treated to several packages to fill time. The celebrities mingled in the three weeks they practiced. The only notable scenes were when Margaret compared Rick to toffee and Florence wanted to see Mike's "situation" (though, to be fair, she may have thought that it was something naughtier than just his abs). Adam Corolla was not funny and didn't need to be there. Finally, the pro dancers were interviewed about how mortifying the first elimination can be. The only pros on this season that have been eliminated first were Kym, Louis and Mark.

Hey, want to impress your friends with useless information? The other first eliminated professionals were Andrea Hale, Elena Grinenko, Alec Mazo (twice) Edyta Sliwinska (twice), and Jonathan Roberts.

The eliminations dragged on like they always did, the producers placed everyone in their scoring brackets (Low, Middle, High) and announced half of each group were safe throughout the show. The big shocker of the night came early when Margaret & Louis were deemed safe. The look of total surprise on Margaret's face showed that she thought she was going home. Eventually, the "bottom two" (though not necessarily the two with the lowest scores) were Kyle and David. The eight-point disparity was probably enough to keep Kyle from elimination if he actually was in the bottom two, but after the Situation, Margaret and Michael Bolton were deemed safe, all signs pointed to David's elimination. So sadly, Kym got to add a second first-round elimination to her list. Brandy looked genuinely disappointed that her fellow 'America's Got Talent' judge was eliminated.

David's daughters mentioned that their father had bad knees, so maybe in the end the early elimination was a good thing for the Hoff's body. He had some of the lowest scores, so his elimination was not the huge shock that Tom tried to make it out to be.

I rooted for Margret. I was not suprised at what she did, only sad. I was surprised she went to the next week. I hope she keeps the humor to the verbal part of the show for a few weeks before she works it back into the dance. She needs to understand the language before she speaks dance comedy. I hope she stays long enough to get into shape

"The Hoff" would not have lastest very long anyway...In the rehearsels he looks Puffy, Sweaty,
Tired, & Out of shape...Dancing takes a lot of hard work to do well!!!! Not just a Leather jacket & Shiny shoes..

David certainly wasn't the worst dancer, but he wasn't a top contender.
It just goes to show that in the early stages of each season. it is very much a popularity contest.
What do people think when they are voting?
The way Margaret danced to the Viennese waltz was absolutely ridiculous - and, after all, isn't the pro suppposed to be ultimately responsible for the choreography of the dance. If the pro lets the star do what (s)he wants to do, and it doesn't fit the style of the dance, then they deserve to go home.

I'd like to know how the pros and the celebrities are matched. It seems to me that Derek always gets a good dancer. How is it he never gets a Florence or a Margaret?
